Professor Tolkien plus Terry Jones plus the archetypal Gawain = superlative gratitude. A foretaste of Christmas hospitality (hospitium) in balmy September.

I’m no fan of the Tolkien translation:- anyone familiar with his student edition of Gawain can’t help noticing JRR just doesn’t get this poem - but Terry Jones’ performance is magnificent, and more than makes up for the clunky lexis.
And then, once you’ve heard just how fine this piece is, you’re going to have to master Middle English to read it properly. (This will also give you an in to Pearl, which is otherwise untranslatable).

(It must sting so to be catastrophically, howlingly wrong all the time! Probably best to apply a topical balm. It might not suffice against that virulent strain of galloping pseud, however.)
Those interested should read Prof Tolkien’s seminal lecture on Sir Gawain, for his incisive exegesis & placement of the tale. His peerless knowledge of the area was crucial in his successful, acclaimed translation. A proper understanding of the medieval period & literature was/is also enormously helpful.
It’s strikingly tragic how so few people truly appreciate these things. Ah, well…
