A groundbreaking, revelatory portrait of the six generations that currently live in the United States and how they connect, conflict, and compete with one another—from the acclaimed author of Generation Me and iGen
The United States is currently home to six generations: the Silents, Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, Generation Z, and Generation Alpha. They have had vastly different life experiences and thus, one assumes, they must have vastly diverging beliefs and behaviors–but what are those differences, what causes them, and how deep do they actually run?
Professor of psychology Jean Twenge does a deep dive into a treasure trove of long-running, government-funded surveys and databases to answer these questions. Are we truly defined by major historical events, such as the Great Depression for the Silents and September 11 for Millennials? Or, as Twenge argues, is it the rapid evolution of technology that differentiates the generations?
With her clear-eyed and insightful voice, Twenge explores what the Silents and Boomers want out of the rest of their lives; how Gen X-ers are facing middle age; the ideals of Millennials as parents and in the workplace; and how Gen Z has been changed by COVID-19, among other fascinating topics. Surprising, engaging, and informative, Generations will forever change the way you view your parents, peers, coworkers, and children, no matter what your generation.

Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, Boomers, and Silents are bs categories made up by practitioners of a pseudoscience that can’t replicate half of it’s most popular theories.
~
**Psychology’s Replication Crisis Is Running Out of Excuses**
‘Another big project has found that only half of studies can be repeated. And this time, the usual explanations fall flat.’
“Over the past few years, an international team of almost 200 psychologists has been trying to repeat a set of previously published experiments from its field, to see if it can get the same results. Despite its best efforts, the project, called Many Labs 2, has only succeeded in 14 out of 28 cases. Six years ago, that might have been shocking. Now it comes as expected (if still somewhat disturbing) news.
In recent years, it has become painfully clear that psychology is facing a “reproducibility crisis,” in which even famous, long-established phenomena—the stuff of textbooks and TED Talks—might not be real. There’s social priming, where subliminal exposures can influence our behavior. And ego depletion, the idea that we have a limited supply of willpower that can be exhausted. And the facial-feedback hypothesis, which simply says that smiling makes us feel happier.”

I used to give much weight to psychology before I came to a point in my life (36) where I began to challenge the mountain of assumptions I had accumulated over almost 4 decades of life. It’s time consuming always asking yourself why do I believe X?
To be perfectly honest most of the things I believed on bad evidence or none at all, I believed because I wanted/needed them to be true because much of my ego & identity was built upon them being true. It wasn’t just me. In fact I almost perfectly represented my society & greater civilization in pretending to know things I do not know. Actually the higher up the ladder you look, the bigger the piles of BS get.
So given it’s track record, why should I read the latest pop psychology book? Psychology is not the only field having this predicament & neoclassic economics is the king of BS pseudoscience cults.
Who knows, perhaps this book will go down in history as the turning point where the results of the research were properly obtained & other independent studies reached the same conclusions?
I’ll wager if you asked people in other countries what generation they are in - Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, Boomers, or Silents they will shrug their shoulders & shake their head at the strange Americans & their categorization obsession.
A growing number of the youngest go by Generation Omega because those 4 generations that came before them used up all the low hanging fruit natural resources, trashed the forests & oceans & triggered runaway climate change. They are correct. They are also well aware & resentful of all gas lighting efforts coming out of think tanks & other propaganda sources.
