Throughout history we have told ourselves stories to try and make sense of what it all means: our place in a small corner of one of billions of galaxies, at the end of billions of years of existence. In this new book Richard Holloway takes us on a personal, scientific and philosophical journey to explore what he believes the answers to the biggest of questions are. He examines what we know about the universe into which - without any choice in the matter - we are propelled at birth and from which we are expelled at death, the stories we have told about where we come from and the stories we tell to get through this muddling experience of life.
Thought-provoking, revelatory, compassionate and playful, Stories We Tell Ourselves is a personal reckoning with life’s mysteries by one of the most important and beloved thinkers of our time.

Richard is an interesting guy, and a lovely bloke (a diamond geezer). Check out his other works.
When presented with a question, always critique/challenge the loaded & contrived terms & assumptions contained therein. A good admonition in the present instance.
Unadorned, non-metaphysical materialism, without intrinsic value, for example.
Also, it’s fascinating the extent to which we are storytelling creatures. This essentially shapes our brains, cognition, existence, cultures, worldview - everything. It fundamentally determines how we perceive and engage with our universe & being; and discern vital values & norms.

There are doers, and there are talkers.
Which you find better to listen to will depend on which you are.

True to form, that’s a deeply Thatcherite cliche - the resentment of the despised “chattering classes” (lol). In a more democratic vein, we should probably listen to everyone - even the previous “talker” - who evidently lacks all self-awareness!
Just in case the import of what was said was too difficult to process: everything is “story” - including, of course, the materialist narrative. One which individuals invest belief in - intense, passionate - sometimes violent - belief.
This is philosophically & cognitively unavoidable - it’s who & what we are. The version a person proposes is merely another story, you might say.
We can’t step outside the storytelling impulse, in this regard, just as we cannot move outside our own psychological paradigms. It’s one of our inescapable design flaws.

I have only read Richard Holloway’s A Little History of Religion and really liked the way he communicates and weaves his ideas, themes and story.
His style is lively, humorous and very entertaining. Additionally,
Looking forward to listening to this one.
