In 2025, with the world descending into madness and anarchy, one woman begins a fateful journey toward a better future
Lauren Olamina is an 18-year-old woman with hyperempathy syndrome — if she sees another in pain, she feels their pain as acutely as if it were real. When her relatively safe neighborhood enclave is destroyed, along with her family and dreams for the future, Lauren grabs a backpack full of supplies and begins a journey north.
Along the way, she recruits fellow refugees to her embryonic faith, Earthseed, the prime tenet of which is that “God is change.” Against a backdrop of horror emerges a message of hope: if we are willing to embrace divine change, we will survive to fulfill our destiny among the stars.

Blaaacks , blech !

Fiction… but NOT science fiction.

Racists, blech!!

Nope… he’s just a Troll.
I went to the author’s website. She lists a lot of books as “Scifi” but from the synopsis’ that I read, NONE are what I would classify as Scifi.

Don’t even bother. She’s a second rate author whose every book is about slavery and repression. She’s unrealistic, preachy and uninspiring. I was forced to read her in college. I can tell you that she is the worst author I have ever read! Even worse than L.Ron Hubbard!

She’s actually an amazing writer, and it is too Science Fiction!
Every one of her books and stories are magic. And THIS one has a very important topic - our readiness and reaction to changing conditions. A good read!

She’s a angry black woman who takes advantage of the overly politically correct world to peddle her amateur writing. It’s not the man keeping you down Octavia, it’s your bitterness.

Her average rating on Goodreads is 4.12 out of 5, with over 19,000 ratings. I think the racist undertones in these comments juxtaposed to the empirical evidence should be enough for any potential readers to make an informed decision.

I’m a white male, and find what she writes exceptionally accurate and well presented. I also find the racists posting here sad examples of what I used to be before I had the courage to self reflect on my social conditioning as a white male American, which included inherent racism as in the comments above. I can’t shame you folks who think this was as I thought I was somehow right when I did, although I was plain wrong, and so are you. If you want to live a full life and know reality and yourselves better, I urge you to not just react with your conditioning and consider that, heck, you might just be wrong at this moment in your ever changing life.

Pay no mind to the racists and low-IQ nutjobs insulting Octavia Butler. She was an excellent writer, and the first major female, black science fiction writer. Lilith’s Brood is one of the grestest first contact novels.

I’ve been reading her Xenogenesis series (which is undeniably science fiction) and find it both intriguing and well conceived. I think it’s clear that the more vehement negative reactions seen above point to the biases of the reader rather than the author.

Jim you absolute troll - you copy/paste the same comment about bitterness on all of her torrents.
Also maybe, just maybe, your definition of sci-fi is too narrow. If all you want are space ships and lasers then look elsewhere.

For me sci-fi can be a genre for showing exaggerated versions of our reality and bringing contemporary issues to light. Butler does this very well.
Decide for yourself - don’t be put off by the hateful comments.

This book is great, yes, I am white as well. Ignore white trash people comments.

The cover must’ve got them going, because I don’t believe for a moment that any of them would really have heard of Octavia Butler.

Octavia E. Butler FIRST black female and first ever female to win MacArthur “Genius” Grant and PEN West Lifetime Achievement Award for her body of work. Not to mention she was awarded Hugo Award for Best Short Story, Hugo Award for Best Novelette, Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story, Nebula Award for Best Novelette, and Nebula Award for Best Novel upon others. IGNORE the racists, fascists, and bigots attempting to discredit Butler’s work. They are white privileged folk who live out their privilege rather than realize the systemic violence of the world that Butler has so concisely exposed.

Ignore the racist comments. She’s been writing fiction since the 70s. Don’t think there was much “political correctness” back then. Plus, these comments prove there’s still much to be done about racist bigots that are offended by historical facts.

This torrent works and the audiobook is good. Only problem is that it is ripped from a cassette, so the quality is a little bad. I will say, it give it a little Orson-Wells-War-of-the-Worlds quality that really works for this book. There are also a few times where the tape skips, speeds up, or cuts out, but never anything SUPER important.

Beautifully written book that is straight to the point. If you go in with an open mind, you’ll find this book to be worth it. Unfortunate that the trolls try to detract from this amazing story, doubt they even read the book or listened to the audio version.

if america was not a s-hole 5 decades into decline and on the heels of collapse little scared white boy-losers would not be crying & moaning, but they are.

Ok, given some of the comments here, I feel the need to leave this review.
Octavia Butler, Margaret Atwood and Ursula K. Le Guin are three authors I would recomment everyone with an interest for science fiction/fantasy should read. They have risen to prominence to a higher degree in recent years, especially Atwood, but are nontheless worth checking out if you enjoy speculative fiction and are not a little snowflake.
My only review for Parable of the Sower will be this; out of all the futuristic visions ever laid out in the world of speculative fiction, none have been as prophetic as this seminal piece of literature.
To anyone complaining about politics in fiction; eat shit.

@Krissed add N K Jemesin to the mix she’s awesome. But I suppose the “Blaaacks , blech !” types of scum wouldn’t want to read her books cause she HAPPENS to be black and a woman lol.
