Acclaimed linguist and award-winning writer John McWhorter argues that an illiberal neoracism, disguised as antiracism, is hurting Black communities and weakening the American social fabric.
Americans of good will on both the left and the right are secretly asking themselves the same question: how has the conversation on race in America gone so crazy?
We’re told read books and listen to music by people of color but that wearing certain clothes is “appropriation.”
We hear that being white automatically gives you privilege and that being Black makes you a victim.
We want to speak up but fear we’ll be seen as unwoke, or worse, labeled a racist.
According to John McWhorter, the problem is that a well-meaning but pernicious form of antiracism has become, not a progressive ideology, but a religion — and one that’s illogical, unreachable, and unintentionally neoracist.
In ‘Woke Racism’, McWhorter reveals the workings of this new religion, from the original sin of “white privilege” and the weaponization of cancel culture to ban heretics, to the evangelical fervor of the “woke mob.”
He shows how this religion that claims to “dismantle racist structures” is actually harming his fellow Black Americans by infantilizing Black people, setting Black students up for failure, and passing policies that disproportionately damage Black communities.
The new religion might be called “antiracism,” but it features a racial essentialism that’s barely distinguishable from racist arguments of the past.
Fortunately for Black America, and for all of us, it’s not too late to push back against woke racism.
McWhorter shares scripts and encouragement with those trying to deprogram friends and family.
And most importantly, he offers a roadmap to justice that actually will help, not hurt, Black America.

Great to hear it’s a religion, I’ll have to let BLM and ANTIFA know that they’re now tax exempt.

There is a new religion. It is moving like a tidal wave through every facet of western culture, shaping and redefining society as it goes. This religion masquerades under the guise of compassion and justice, but underneath is an evil ideology that is incompatible with western values and incongruent with the Christian worldview. This movement did not start in Minneapolis on May 25th, when George Floyd was murdered. That event acted as a watershed moment for an ideology that has been growing for decades. If left unchecked, this new religion could lead to a complete unravelling of western culture…

“Woke” is a religion. That’s been affirmatively determined by dozens of smart observers, including New York magazine columnist Andrew Sullivan. He recently described what he called “the cult of social justice, whose followers show the same zeal as any born-again Evangelical. They are filling the void that Christianity once owned.” While Sullivan and many other commentators have pointed to certain failings in the theology of Wokeism, none has put his finger on the most important issue. Simply put, there are good religions and there are bad religions…

Yeah, even the original wokelords are starting to get sick of hearing these defective records on continuous repeat.
And McWhorter is not an intellectual lightweight that these lefty babies can shrug off, he even has a column in the New York Times.
I can heartily recommend his language lectures too, though they too will probably upset the wokelords when he puts the idea that “language and culture make all our thoughts unique” to the sword.
Truth hurts and guys like Jack, the resident shill, are too broken to ever accept the truth, but there’s still time for the rest of the world before the fools eat themselves.

Unlike just about everyone else discussing this topic (including these comments), McWhorter is both honest and pretty competent. There are a couple of things he seems unfamiliar with, like just how much of last year’s us-protesting was driven by police beating up random people rather than anything to do with “grievance studies”, but otherwise he makes good points and is worth listening to.
October 28th, 2021
Lol. “Police beating up random people”? Like the known drug addict and woman abusing scumbag George Floyd? Not exactly random, given he was as high as a kite on Fentanyl. But whatever fantasy floats your boat as you try to justify behavior that cannot be justified.

@alnilam yawn. Copying and pasting doesn’t make something true. Especially when you’re pasting opinion pieces.
Gordon, there’s merit to some of the ideas in this book. I didn’t say otherwise. You’re arguing with your own imagination here.
October 28th, 2021
Gordon, it’s not a police officer’s job to execute someone they have detained. Unless you’re opposed to the concept of “guilty until proven innocent in a court of law” idea. And don’t give me any of that “those police officers were acting in self-defense” guff. That was an execution.
October 28th, 2021
No, it wasn’t. The only execution that took place around George Floyd was that of a highly trained police officer’s career and freedom to sate a woke mob without facts or evidence.
There are several sets of footage from that day and it’s very clear from many of them, nobody knelt on Floyd’s neck and he died of an overdose. But keep on dreaming Jack, the world needs useful fools and it’s all you can aspire to be.

Lol. Yes, Jack, I’ll take your JPEG over the camera footage. Run along now, crazy boy, you’ve got windows to lick.
October 28th, 2021
for some resason the ABB link for “Helen Pluckrose, James A. Lindsay - Cynical Theories” audiobook does not work, but it’s not difficult to find it, using search
October 28th, 2021
Oh, you want the camera footage? Officer J.Alexander Kueng’s bodycam shows Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck from 11:28 to 20:40.

And you’re still a liar

An even better angle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcFoi1q9Cf4&ab_channel=djsylert
And the coroner ruled it was pressure to the neck which was the primary cause of death.
Is that enough? Are you willing to admit that MAYBE that’s a knee on his neck?

this ABB link should work properly

Slurp, slurp Jack, keep on licking those windows.

“Religion” is an unfortunate exaggeration, which makes an easy target for put-downs, the laziest excuse for not engaging intellectually.
But there is certainly a degree of cult-like behavior involved in, not just BLM, but all forms of identity politics, with its ritualized signaling and cancel culture acting as thought police.
October 28th, 2021
@Jack_Milad - Ha! Tax exempt. Nice one. :)
Anyone else notice how the people who purportedly hold these opinions are always portrayed as a silent majority? Funny that. The people I know who hate BLM, blindly support the police, or hold outright racist views usually can’t keep their mouths shut about it. Silent they ain’t.
October 28th, 2021
Great look Gordon, spouting off about how lefties can’t accept reality then refusing to accept reality. Makes you look reeeeal smart.
October 28th, 2021
The hilarious part is that mueller laid out the timeline of Putin creating BLM in the criminal charges and no one seems to notice since it doesn’t fit in a meme or help with a coup attempt.
It’s as amusing as the thousands of shootings annually that don’t matter to the racists without a white man involved

Whether or not ‘Wokeism’ is, or can be reasonably called a new religion is debatable, but (i) a quick search using the keywords ‘woke wokeism new religion’ produces huge volume of information in favor of such an assumption, and (ii) under the duck rule angle (*) it certainly looks and feels like one (maybe to call it ‘quasi-religion’ would be a bit more precise).
(*) If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck.
October 28th, 2021
“Police beating up random people” like hospital workers, school children, and people driving home, beaten and oftentimes permanently maimed by angry police officers.
October 28th, 2021
@alnilam Selectively googling what you want to be true and using the amount of results as an indicator as to whether or not something is true is ridiculous. And even if you use that as a measurement, there are still more than DOUBLE the results for
*wokeism “not a religion”* (17,800 results)
than for
*wokeism “is a religion* (5,860 results).
So even by your own very flawed metric, your point is disproven. And as a fun fact, there are over 330,000 results for *Trumpism “is a religion”. So yeah…
October 28th, 2021
(i) Woke-friendly Google algorithms and their output, what could possibly be more trustworthy?
(ii) Apparently, even trolls choose to stay away from the mighty Duck Rule.
October 28th, 2021
make the $$$ bitch. They love to be stroked.
October 28th, 2021
We need a federal program to bring progressives / liberals / ANTIFA into law enforcement. Why don’t the Democrats get behind this? All of the problems with policing blacks would be solved.
October 28th, 2021
Yeah. nominate a black sell out as the blacksplainer in chief with all that civil servant pension $$$$$$. since we own all media, what ever idea the slave-wage class come up with will flood our corporate media airways overwhelmingly negative bizarro world retellings. Back in the days they used to pay pastors to do this to the young voices who wanted a better future for themselves and others.
October 28th, 2021
@alnilam you mean the woke algorithms that you relied on to support your claim? Make your mind up.
As for quacking like a duck, you sure you want to use that method of thinking on a site where a lot of people use the same arguments as literal white supremacists?
October 28th, 2021
“Americans of good will on both the left and the right are secretly asking themselves the same question:”
Really. Fortunately the author can read their minds and knows this “secret”.
The usual “I speak for the silent majority” argument of the far right to simply assert an opinion or conspiracy theory as fact that “everyone knows…”, “the MSM won’t tell you…”, close cousin to Trump’s “People are saying”, and the classic “A big tough guy, tears in his eyes, said, “Sir, it’s the truth…”.
October 28th, 2021
sell out economy is making bank $$$$$$$$$$$$$ for blacks like him, sooothing lazy pensioners ego while they dabble in the stock market losing their disposable income.
October 29th, 2021
“blacks like him” - yeah, here we go…
“Back in the days they used to pay pastors to do this to the young voices who wanted a better future for themselves and others” - like John Lewis, MLK, and all the other activists & leaders?
October 29th, 2021
Actually not too far off from how those civil rights activists were selected, yes, putting people like MLK and Rosa Parks in the spotlight because poor pregnant teenagers or weird gay people like Baldwin are just too icky for now and can have their rights later. Every step is that way, “we may be gay but otherwise we’re just like you!, and you’ve still got those trans and sex workers to hate on, so why not leave us alone for now.” etc. Maybe it’s pragmatic, but still frustrating.
None of that’s got anything to do with McWhorter though.
October 31st, 2021
Yeah, but has it got anything to do with Lewis, King, and all the others?
That these leaders were paid “to do this to the young” - whatever the “this” con theory happens to be? Does it all really suggest another incoherent conspiracy?
November 1st, 2021
Thank you for the upload. Excellent book!
November 2nd, 2021
Definitely worth a listen.
I’m listening because I’m to the left and committed to antiracism, environmental protection and a new economics. That said, I’m very unhappy that cancel culture and related languaging can remind me - all too often - of the Witchfinder General/Salem approach.
Sad to see people above basically say that George Floyd wasn’t murdered. It was, at best, manslaughter by negligence. I don’t care to live in a ‘Magnum Force’ society (second Dirty Harry movie).

Thank you! 🙏

I think, looking at it from today, wokeism burnt itself out as most fads do.
