Giridharadas asks hard questions: Why, for example, should our gravest problems be solved by the unelected upper crust instead of the public institutions it erodes by lobbying and dodging taxes? He also points toward an answer: Rather than rely on scraps from the winners, we must take on the grueling democratic work of building more robust, egalitarian institutions and truly changing the world. The “left” are as loathsome and untrustworthy and self-obsessed as the very worst so called right wingers (who themselves do not encourage huge gangs of druggies and controlling “minorities” - mainly extremist gays and lesbians - to attack innocent people in their own countries. The left DO)

Both the “rich and powerful” and the so-called “elite” have an agenda, hidden, only to the poor and uncultured, as well as the pressure groups, who are in quest of identification by means of a mistakenly glorified identity, through victimhood. As long as this situation endures, and until this consortium of imagined identities themselves begin to see the light, and reject this quest for false identification, we will be in distress, and no book or simple argument can change anything.
