America’s political system isn’t broken. The truth is scarier: It’s working exactly as designed. In this book, journalist Ezra Klein reveals how that system is polarizing us - and how we are polarizing it - with disastrous results.
“The American political system - which includes everyone from voters to journalists to the president - is full of rational actors making rational decisions given the incentives they face,” writes political analyst Ezra Klein. “We are a collection of functional parts whose efforts combine into a dysfunctional whole.”
In Why We’re Polarized, Klein reveals the structural and psychological forces behind America’s descent into division and dysfunction. Neither a polemic nor a lament, this book offers a clear framework for understanding everything from Trump’s rise to the Democratic Party’s leftward shift to the politicization of everyday culture.
America is polarized, first and foremost, by identity. Everyone engaged in American politics is engaged, at some level, in identity politics. Over the past 50 years in America, our partisan identities have merged with our racial, religious, geographic, ideological, and cultural identities. These merged identities have attained a weight that is breaking much in our politics and tearing at the bonds that hold this country together.
Klein shows how and why American politics polarized around identity in the 20th century, and what that polarization did to the way we see the world and one another. And he traces the feedback loops between polarized political identities and polarized political institutions that are driving our system toward crisis.

This book is very “you” ole buddy (meant in the best possible way). We could impose a little historical perspective on events, and consider how insanely bitter & hostile the contest for the Presidency was between Adams & Jefferson, as an example. The standard, democratic, pugilistic fisticuffs & contentious flapdoodle might only be a token of salubrious vibrancy. (Just tryin’ to be patiently Panglossian - or a puffed-up pollyanna, to avoid pernicious gender normativeness)

The beneficial Jewish contribution to Western Civilisation has been incalculable.

Thks ssafe05. Also I agree with caesar, by and large the Jews are a great bunch of lads hehe. Also for a happy life I suggest families unplug from the internet. Chances are you’ll be well positioned for whatever the future holds in store after a few years of that.

True enough, we’re the same as of old, nature-wise. The flashy technological gizmos are merely the questionable, habit-forming added extras. They present us to ourselves - mirror to our nasty natures - in a particularly lurid fashion.
(I seriously hope you didn’t vote for Sinn Fein, you old blaggard. Another fine mess…)

Hehe perish the thought. I confess I’d have been guilty be of voting for Irexit though given half a chance. In any case I’ll be moving west soon would you believe. Please forward my mail care of the Roscommon Irish reservation.

the comments are so good that i didn’t need to download the offering.

Yeah, Irexit would just about finish us off, once & for all. We’d be about Ready Brexit for national self-immolation. After that demonic referendum two years, I couldn’t vote for any of the parties. I’m a political orphan. My family used to vote for the blueshirts. They can phook off now (not my family). My dad’s family is from Roscommon. I grew up there (in addition to Kerry & Dublin). My mum still has a house in Strokestown, the grand metropolis.

@caesar and roscoteapot: I spent an uncomfortable time in the County Cork hospital with gastro issues brought on by a spot of undercooked salmon. It was like a trip back to the 50’s with the iron beds and their chipped enamel paint. On the other hand, I walked out without having to pay an eire penny. So there’s that.
February 17th, 2020
A trip back to the 1850s? You were lucky to even get a chipped bed! That’s our socialist healthcare system for ya…
So, you’re like the American at the end of Monty Python & the Meaning of Life who eats the dodgy salmon and gets verbally abused by the Grim Reaper, who doesn’t seem to care for Americans?
We don’t take kindly to your kind around these here parts…(fade to duelling banjos)

IT WAS THE SALMON MOUSSE!!
February 17th, 2020
Terrific book.
February 17th, 2020
I wouldn’t categorize this book as history.
February 17th, 2020
But I didn’t eat the salmon!
Oh wait; I did indulge in polarizing identity politics, though. Fair cop, then, Mr Reaper. Take me away.
February 17th, 2020
Strokestown! By George, you know I don’t think I could blame you for thinking I may be a malevolent reverse Jackeen creature from an episode of Sapphire & Steel or something but the prices are somewhat reasonable. Is there a town secret they’re not telling us about like a Cthulhu monster under the mansion? Ouch! Ssafe05. I do apologise. Salmon mousse sounds like Russian roulette first year cooking class dish, very dicey.

“Everyone engaged in American politics is engaged, at some level, in identity politics. ”
Not at all, it is the loony left that engages in this nonsense.
February 17th, 2020
@litote: If you can suppress you gag reflex long enough to read the book, it actually lays out several very interesting studies that show that both sides engage in identity politics, including Republicans, Independents, and those on the right. It’s part of how we are wired.
I originally put off reading the book because I find Ezra’s podcasts to be a wee bit left of me, but was pleasantly surprised see how the book unpacks that identity politics assertion you quote.

@Rosco - We used to have our Catholic school retreats in that fine old mansion, so I hope the cosmic horror element was marginal. Who am I kidding, the whole crazy conurbation is a Lovecraftian gallimaufry of doom. Virgin sacrifices are a social staple (although the sacrificial subjects are increasingly difficult to discover). Don’t make the Celtic tiger mistake of buying on a flood plain - or eating of the yellowing snow, for that matter. Tell me true: is Strokestown really the destination? Good schools, civilised folks, speedy broadband, proximity to scenic beauty, oceans of rain, et cetera. My brother’s coming home from California next month to start a business.
On the issue of identity politics - aren’t they merely a mask for racism by the back door? Racism 2.0, as it were, for the cool kids?
February 17th, 2020
Indeed I have driven the Google van all over Strokestown but I’ll be constrained by where the next bargain in Donegal, Roscommon, Sligo or wherever an American inherits and wants to make a quick sale is when I get to pull the trigger. Strutting around the town on a mission like Edward Woodward sounds good to me though so I’ll cross my fingers hehe.
I think Republicans are referring to the part of a suspected Frankfurt school plot which includes forced equality of outcome via the Oppression Olympics when they hear and speak about identity politics. We have a large ideological abstraction untethered in the China shop folks. Tie it down before someone blames the you know whos. I’ll give the book a go ssafe05 to see which of our sneaky shenanigans are being referred to under the same umbrella
February 17th, 2020
A word of warning: it did not end well for Woodward (I didn’t watch the crazy Nicolas Rage version).
Collectivists like to generalise generally to facilitate/enable collective punishments. Because we’re all exactly the same, apparently…

Ezra Klein is a partisan hack
February 17th, 2020
…not merely a hack - two drinks and he’s anyone’s - left, right & centre.
February 17th, 2020
Erm am I remembering correctly but did Congress pass a law when De Valera was there saying Ireland can be the 51st state? It would jib Puerto Rico but so far this book really makes me want to vote lol.
February 17th, 2020
Closer to Boston than Berlin? Leave Old Europe behind, to sink like Atlantis.
It would terrify them to find out how Leftist we’ve become. In the case of Sinn Fein, both Nationalist AND Socialist. Crikey, then that would make them…oh, no!!!
February 17th, 2020
Oh snap! I think I’ve had too much of this politics stuff and need a hollier. I like Poland. Yeah everyone should go on holiday there. Let’s not ask about getting a visa or anything and just rush in from all angles. They will be so delighted.
February 17th, 2020
They’ve had a lot of that before, remember, people “russing” in from all angles, without a by your leave (the puns get worse - I was going to say that they Warsaw a lot of that before, just for the Cracow, you understand). A Polish girl I know said that Cracow is preferable over Warsaw for a visit. She’s biased, but Warsaw, like a lot of cities in Mitteleuropa, was flattened, whereas the character of Cracow has been largely preserved. Some parts will transport you back to the beautiful Medieval & Renaissance Catholic past of Europe. You can also take in Leonardo’s “Lady with an Ermine” - not too shabby.
As far as domus-hunting, Leitrim has been substantially denuded of its population.
February 17th, 2020
@ssafe05: I don’t need to read the verbal diarrhoea of a leftist hack to know that identity politics is identified entirely with the left. It is plainly obvious except to ignoramuses like yourself. This divisive tactic will backfire on the Dems in the next U.S. election.
February 18th, 2020
@litote: I don’t know what definition of “identity politics” you are using. Dictionary has “a tendency for people of a particular religion, race, social background, etc., to form exclusive political alliances”, and that pretty much describes the right wing in the US; the more extreme, the more white.
“Left” identity politics is focused on INCLUDING groups, while the right is for EXCLUDING, demonising, etc.: Build the wall, Muslim Ban, Mexican rapists, Soros is Satan, etc.
Anyway, demographics will doom the white nationalists, if not this year, then next. Enjoy your last hurrah.
February 18th, 2020
@Gweilo: Your first sentence does at least make sense.
The term “identity politics” is commonly used and understood to refer to the (left’s) weaponisation of race/gender, etc to force their demands by shaming and instituting policies that favour their goals.
The right does not continually demand special treatment and attack others over perceived sins based on their ethnicity, gender, etc.
Racial and gender quotas in universities and the workplace constantly pushed by the left EXCLUDE WASP heterosexual males (and Asians in the case of some universities); they do not INCLUDE them.
Once again you reveal your ugly racism by connecting extremism with being “white”.
Your equating the U.S. border wall with racism is hysterical. It is meant to protect border security you mental defective, which is in the interests of all U.S. citizens regardless of ethnicity.
I have no doubt, even given your resentment of whites, that you would prefer to live in a functioning Western nation rather than Mexico or Haiti, if you don’t already (I’m betting that you do).
February 18th, 2020
*whispers, Yeah I’d love Leitrim. Also have you heard of Bald and Bankrupt? You have travelled so will get a laugh out of his adventures.
February 18th, 2020
@Rosco - *redolent of trying to have a tea party during an ideological air raid. Very Monty Python. Like the polarised have decided to swarm, in all sooth. And it’s always a challenge to find shelter from a bombardment on the northside.
I shall investigate this hirsute and solvent chap. Always appreciate a recommendation from the cognoscenti.

Hail. Here’s a couple of the good ones so you don’t start with a dud. Till the next time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mL1aI6aabs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQJ5Z4oFvsQ
February 20th, 2020
@Litote. OK, you are using Breitbart’s Dictionary, I see. I was using Oxford, thus the disconnect.
February 24th, 2020
@Gweilo: The disconnect is between your synapses.

Klein worked on Howard Dean’s primary campaign in Vermont in 2003. Worked for The Washington Compost and MSLSD.and is frequently on the Rachael Madcow “show”.
The guy would eat his own bowel movement for $$
