Why the social character of scientific knowledge makes it trustworthy
Do doctors really know what they are talking about when they tell us vaccines are safe? Should we take climate experts at their word when they warn us about the perils of global warming? Why should we trust science when our own politicians don’t? In this landmark book, Naomi Oreskes offers a bold and compelling defense of science, revealing why the social character of scientific knowledge is its greatest strength - and the greatest reason we can trust it.
Tracing the history and philosophy of science from the late 19th century to today, Oreskes explains that, contrary to popular belief, there is no single scientific method. Rather, the trustworthiness of scientific claims derives from the social process by which they are rigorously vetted. This process is not perfect - nothing ever is when humans are involved - but she draws vital lessons from cases where scientists got it wrong. Oreskes shows how consensus is a crucial indicator of when a scientific matter has been settled, and when the knowledge produced is likely to be trustworthy.
Based on the Tanner Lectures on Human Values at Princeton University, this timely and provocative book features critical responses by climate experts Ottmar Edenhofer and Martin Kowarsch, political scientist Jon Krosnick, philosopher of science Marc Lange, and science historian Susan Lindee, as well as a foreword by political theorist Stephen Macedo.

Science is one thing.
Scientists are a totally different story, and are easily manipulated by withholding or granting funding, a desire to be in step with current trends, and of course, protecting the status quo from other scientists who might have evidence damaging to their own positions. In short, scientists are humans and bring their own agendas into whatever they do.
Fools will mock me, but the wise will understand.

@jkdmanaz You obviously have no idea how to separate opinion from fact. Do you even comprehend how published journals work, o how a scientific consensus is reached? Yes, anyone can confirm their own biases if they want. But the information is not going to pass any amount of scrutiny.

@jkdmanaz clearly hasn’t read the argument of the book. The wise will understand.

@woden1809 and @meeeeeeeettterewsf, maybe you’ve had some actual experience with journal article submission and peer review. Possibly you are familiar with the “replication crisis,” “publication bias” or so called “incentives.” If so, then you would probably give @jkdmanaz the benefit of a doubt, since he is definitely on to a few truths, unfortunately.

I hate stereotypes, but one of my first thoughts was, “This sounds like a book written by a Jew.” Turns out it is. Why does that matter? Because of tribally-motivated social agendas. There, I said it.

Science is the process of overcoming the bias of the humans who do it @jkdmanaz
