In the wake of a suicide, the most troubling questions are the most difficult to answer: How could we have known? What could we have done? And always: Why? Written by a clinical psychologist whose own life has been touched by suicide, this book offers the clearest account ever given of why some people choose to die.
Drawing on clinical and epidemiological evidence, as well as personal experience, Thomas Joiner brings a comprehensive understanding to seemingly incomprehensible behavior. Among the many people who have considered, attempted, or died by suicide, he finds three factors that mark those most at risk of death: the feeling of being a burden on loved ones; the sense of isolation; and, chillingly, the learned ability to hurt oneself. Joiner tests his theory against diverse facts taken from clinical anecdotes, history, literature, popular culture, anthropology, epidemiology, genetics, and neurobiology—facts about suicide rates among men and women; white and African-American men; anorexics, athletes, prostitutes, and physicians; members of cults, sports fans, and citizens of nations in crisis. The result is the most coherent and persuasive explanation ever given of why and how people overcome life’s strongest instinct, self-preservation. Joiner’s is a work that makes sense of the bewildering array of statistics and stories surrounding suicidal behavior.

What about cptsd, and major depressi e disorder, and a vulnerability to feeling abandoned & betrayed & mistreated due to childhood abuse/fear (ie, CPTSD)? Or… what about those who rationally opt for this because they did something (perhaps with some malicious passive aggressive intent) which had deadly consequences to one or more people who they love and were integral to their existence & future — a future which was already going to be relatively short due to age? Okay, maybe this last scenario is rare. But I am surprised that the summary doesnt mention ptsd or childhood abuse & trauma (esp from parents, or known to parents). The 2 people close to me who committed suicide had experienced childhood abuse & trauma which left them vulnerable to feeling rejected — although both had developed successful careers and were justifiably self-confident, and uninhibited in relationships. But deep deep down, they were prone to a very fundamental sense of abandonment, and rejection. 💔💔 All that said, I will listen to the book as he is an academic expert on this, and one ought not judge a book by its audiobookbay summary.

As someone who attempted suicide, I’d agree with lack of hope for things getting better in the future, not wanting to be a burden to family (no body likes being around depressed people, kill yourself and those around you won’t have to worry about you anymore), friendless, and simply depression. A change in nutrition cured my depression and looking back, all those reasons were excuses or explanations I came up with to justify how I was thinking and feeling. But the source of those thoughts was the lack of enough magnesium and they all went away when I fixed that.
For those who say suicide is cowardliness, it’s not. It takes a huge effort of will to kill yourself even if made out of desperation. No one who succeeds is a coward. As someone who attempted suicide, I’d agree with lack of hope for things getting better in the future, not wanting to be a burden to family (no body likes being around depressed people, kill yourself and those around you won’t have to worry about you anymore), friendless, and simply depression.
