The American political scene today is poisonously divided, and the vast majority of white evangelicals plays a strikingly unified, powerful role in the disunion. These evangelicals raise a starkly consequential question for electoral politics: Why do they claim morality while supporting politicians who act immorally by most Christian measures? In this clear-eyed, hard-hitting chronicle of American religion and politics, Anthea Butler answers that racism is at the core of conservative evangelical activism and power.
Butler reveals how evangelical racism, propelled by the benefits of whiteness, has since the nation’s founding played a provocative role in severely fracturing the electorate. During the buildup to the Civil War, white evangelicals used scripture to defend slavery and nurture the Confederacy. During Reconstruction, they used it to deny the vote to newly emancipated blacks. In the twentieth century, they sided with segregationists in avidly opposing movements for racial equality and civil rights. Most recently, evangelicals supported the Tea Party, a Muslim ban, and border policies allowing family separation. White evangelicals today, cloaked in a vision of Christian patriarchy and nationhood, form a staunch voting bloc in support of white leadership. Evangelicalism’s racial history festers, splits America, and needs a reckoning now.
Anthea Butler is associate professor of religion at the University of Pennsylvania and the author of Women in the Church of God in Christ: Making a Sanctified World. A leading historian and public commentator on religion and politics, Butler has appeared on networks including CNN, BBC, and MSNBC and has published opinion pieces in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and many other media outlets.

The blind writing books about the blind. Anything with racism in the title or description, sells.
If there is anything that resembles what those Evangelical Christians call Judgment Day, this must be it. Pseudo-intellectuals, people educated beyond their intellect, elevated to celebrity status by the mob. It becomes the blind leading the gullible, and the credulous have the guns.

Quite right - some evangelicals defended slavery. BUT it was the evangelical movement in the North that pushed to abolish slavery. In fact, it was evangelicals from the North who fought and died to free slaves.
Not everything is simple, nor is everything to be viewed from a perspective three days old.

@Poppy7 makes a great point. Nothings simple. I’d be curious what the modern day equivalent is to fighting to abolish slavery. I’m skeptical, but just because I’m not seeing it doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.
There’s no reason to rate without listening, though. There’s only so much room for nuance in a blurb and title. I’ve listened to many books with click-bait titles that transcended them.

I always find it impressive that the mentally defective can hold a crayon long enough to write another book about an imaginary problem.
Congrats to the author and let’s hope that she always has enough windows to lick when she’s not writing.
I also find it amusing that one must either accept an attack on evangelicals or be an evangelical oneself, no wonder this site has so many fans of garbage like this if it’s the best logic they can muster.
Particularly, because if you were to replace “evangelical” with “Islamist” or “Jewish person”, the same foolish folk would be shrieking “racism” to the heavens.

Is there anyone who can read that has paid even casual attention to U.S. current affairs during the last five years who doesn’t already know all this.
Evangelical Christianity has done for Christianity what the Romans never could. Christianity is cringeworthy: An antiscience cult that spews hate, full of fear about loss of dominance and control.
I used to coddle them, trying to spare their feelings on the rare occasions I emcountered one. That’s all over.

Does anyone ever write about black racism or Asian racism? Racism is present in each of us to varying degrees irrespective of the colour of our skin. Like jealousy, it isn’t a nice characteristic and no matter how many angry books are written or social engineering projects are implemented, it will remain.

As a Christian from a civilized nation, we do not recognize American Evangelicals as real Christians for a number of reasons. Older American Evangelicals, if their being honest, will remember the separation from politics. Selling out happened around the same time as Sunday shopping started. Money & politics won. I don’t even recognize your Jesus. He sounds alot like a Jesus from a couple American fiction writers who use a made up version of an American Jesus. Those guys sold millions of novels & made millions of silver pieces. Jesus for sale.
