A spirited, deeply researched exploration of why capitalism is bad for women and how, when done right, socialism leads to economic independence, better labor conditions, better work-life balance, and yes, even better sex.
In a witty, irreverent op-ed piece that went viral, Kristen Ghodsee argued that women had better sex under socialism. The response was tremendous - clearly she articulated something many women had sensed for years: The problem is with capitalism, not with us.
Ghodsee, an acclaimed ethnographer and professor of Russian and East European studies, spent years researching what happened to women in countries that transitioned from state socialism to capitalism. She argues here that unregulated capitalism disproportionately harms women and that we should learn from the past. By rejecting the bad and salvaging the good, we can adapt some socialist ideas to the 21st century and improve our lives.
She tackles all aspects of a woman’s life - work, parenting, sex and relationships, citizenship, and leadership. In a chapter called “Women: Like Men, but Cheaper”, she talks about women in the workplace, discussing everything from the wage gap to harassment and discrimination. In “What to Expect When You’re Expecting Exploitation”, she addresses motherhood and how “having it all” is impossible under capitalism.
Women are standing up for themselves like never before, from the increase in the number of women running for office to the women’s march to the long-overdue public outcry against sexual harassment. Interest in socialism is also on the rise - whether it’s the popularity of Bernie Sanders or the skyrocketing membership numbers of the Democratic Socialists of America. It’s become increasingly clear to women that capitalism isn’t working for us, and Ghodsee is the informed, lively guide who can show us the way forward.

I read this book! It’s great! There’s lots of interesting statistics related to socialism, including how women who have lived in both socialist and capitalist societies say they were happier under socialism, and therefore had better sex.

Because they’re tired of getting screwed by Capitalists.

Oh yes - definitely something from the fiction/fantasy area. Having actually seen lines of women worn down by the stress of living under socialism, just trying to get a loaf of bread and some meat for their families it is quite obvious, like many neoliberal/socialists the author is pretty much clueless.

P’haps they’re having it off with next door Nikita, while hubby is in the concentration camp? Following what Roddd said, I remember when journalists from Western Europe were covering Soviet Russia & Eastern Europe, they would remark on how so many people looked 10-20 years older than their actual age. It was/is an enormously difficult life.

One distinction that should be made is that Socialism as an economic model spans the gamut from democracies to totalitarian countries. Many associate Socialism with the dictatorial State “Socialist” countries like many Soviet republics. In pure democratic socialism, it just means basically that the workers have a strong, even dominant, say in the workings of the means of production and distribution of goods and services. It is a utopian bottom-up system. In many countries we think of as Socialist, what we are really talking about is “State Socialism,” a perversion where a dictatorial regime decides it is better suited than the working people to make their decisions and arrogates unto itself the “right” to usurp the people’s economic sovereignty. You wouldn’t judge Democracy by looking at the “People’s Democratic Republic of Korea (North Korea) just because it labels itself “Democratic” and a “Republic.” Socialism, as practiced in democratic countries, simply gives workers a stake instead of vesting it solely in corporate management and wealthy investors. Publix Supermarkets along the East Coast ranks the #1 chain in the country. It is entirely owned by the 900,000 current and former employees, making it the largest autonomous socialist commune in the country. The idea of an employee-owned business is the essence of pure socialism. And, these businesses, because the employees have their own stake in the ownership and running of the business, provide standout products and services - when the workers know they are working for themselves and not just Pharaoh.
A Capitalist is, by definition, a wealthy person who lives off of dividends and equity ownership, not salaried or hourly labor. The great majority of people in a Capitalist economy work for the Capitalists - they aren’t themselves Capitalists. The opposite is true in democratic Socialism.

Expediently attempting to define one’s way out of the problem does not work; nor does it create Utopia - an imaginary state which cannot exist (although almost 150 million people were murdered by fools who imagined that they could engineer it). For “pure” democratic socialists, the impure will not fit. In jurisdictions which uphold the rule of law, people imbued with individual liberty are free to associate; they also possess the concomitant right not to associate, if they so choose.
Usefully, Marx & Engels deployed terms like socialist and communist interchangeably. But then they weren’t “pure” Marxists.

I just adore the merican internet experts. never been to these countries, nor do they speak the language, yet they’ve convinced themselves they are multi nation cultural historians.
Dunning-Kruger mericans will never get it. Might get Covid & die thus adding to the shameful death totals. #1 nation in Covid deaths, yet you only make up 5% of the worlds population. What a joke. The world is laughing at you. Enjoy your bankruptcy, civil war & nightmare collapse, losers.

Roddd do you have a name for this bread line nation or do we need to wait for you to make that up too? Is this the same country your super hot girl friend is from? The one you lost the pitcher/proof of? Lost her phone number too eh?

The most pathetic excuse for a book ever - that is totally the opposite of reality!! Seriously are you liberals that stupid? Go live in Venezuela!!
June 27th, 2020
On the internet, everyone is merican, unless they can, with efficacious suasion, rebut the presumption. I thought you were gonna say that peeps have better sex under socialism - provided they eff their brains out.

This book has to be satire.
Democratic, Socialist women are last type of female a man would want to connect with
Mean faced, unhappy, argumentative, unstable, whiners and crybabies.
Fema-Nazis at their worse. Dating them is about as satisfying as crawling through glass or chewing barb wire.

“We had no money, no food..”
“so what did you have?”
“well we could get screwed easily…”

I enjoyed this book a lot and its core premise is easy to absorb — human relations are better undistorted by money-greed and profit-thirst. It’s no longer common-sense unfortunately but the book makes a strong case that it is at least good sense.

Be poor and have more sex, or be comfortable and have less sex….
I think I’d rather live in Eastern Europe in the 80s. What would I do with the money anyway?

Good book

there can be good things about the state socialist countries. that doesn’t mean that they were perfect or should be held up as goals or standards, just that we should look to where they’ve done better and try to incorporate those policies/goals in our vision of a fuhure
