Join the important conversation about race, empowerment, and inclusion with this powerful new feminist classic and rousing call for change. Koa Beck, writer and former editor-in-chief of Jezebel, boldly examines the history of feminism, from the true mission of the suffragettes to the rise of corporate feminism with clear-eyed scrutiny and meticulous detail. She also examines overlooked communities, including Native American, Muslim, transgender, and more - and their difficult and ongoing struggles for social change.
In these pages she meticulously documents how elitism and racial prejudice has driven the narrative of feminist discourse. She blends pop culture, primary historical research, and first-hand storytelling to show us how we have shut women out of the movement, and what we can do to change things for a new generation.
Combining a scholar’s understanding with hard data and razor-sharp cultural commentary, White Feminism is a witty, intelligent and profoundly eye-opening book that will challenge long-accepted conventions and completely upend the way we understand the struggle for women’s equality.

marcodiluce, et al. missing apollo60, how come? Your lives must be really boring trolling the site trying to sabotage anything that you don’t agree with. Miserable indeed..

The suffragettes and first feminists (at least those who you saw publicly) definitely were white. If you think society would have tolerated a black woman wanting to be treated equally prior to the 1970’s you have zero awareness of history. Hell, it’s 50 years later and some of you still have this type of knee-jerk reaction the moment feminism or black people are mentioned.

@Jack_Milad
It appears you have less than zero awareness of history…
SOJOURNER TRUTH, abolitionist and women’s rights activist
“If it is not a fit place for women, it is unfit for men to be there.”
Born a slave, Truth escaped to freedom in 1826 and spent her life advocating for equal rights for all. Her famous “Ain’t I a Woman?” speech addressed the lack of recognition towards black women in the promotion of equal rights.

@pagrimsby being able to name an exception doesn’t mean the statement doesn’t still stand. Being able to name a black president doesn’t suddenly mean that black people have had the same representation in the White House as elderly white men and you know that. It’s disingenuous to pretend otherwise.

Not sure whether that was supposed to be a ‘gotcha’ moment, but the fact you’ve referred to a black woman who was born into slavery whose main message was that black women weren’t given the same degree of equality as their white counterparts is reiterating the exact points I was making.
