Has liberalism failed because it has succeeded?
Of the three dominant ideologies of the 20th century - fascism, communism, and liberalism - only the last remains. This has created a peculiar situation in which liberalism’s proponents tend to forget that it is an ideology and not the natural end-state of human political evolution. As Patrick Deneen argues in this provocative book, liberalism is built on a foundation of contradictions: It trumpets equal rights while fostering incomparable material inequality; its legitimacy rests on consent, yet it discourages civic commitments in favor of privatism; and in its pursuit of individual autonomy, it has given rise to the most far-reaching, comprehensive state system in human history.
Here, Deneen offers an astringent warning that the centripetal forces now at work on our political culture are not superficial flaws but inherent features of a system whose success is generating its own failure.

I’m a little confused here. Is Deneen in favor of or against traditional liberalism? Yes, it is true that there are tensions at play in America’s Federal Representative Democratic Republic, that’s why the founders signed the Constitution with no little fear and trepidation, and warned us of the many looming dangers. No man made system of government, or philosophy in general, is without flaws.

@Sauser - I really hope that’s just healthy satire, and that you’re not having a stroke.
The death knell was rung for liberal democracy in the 1930s. Then, it essentially defeated the other two systems, despite their ruthless brutality.
These dynamics can be cyclical in nature.

Caesar963, I presume you are referring to The New Deal, when you speak of the ’30s. Fortunately, the courts were able to stop some of the extreme facets of FDR’s regulations, and then there was also a number of people who rose up to meet the challenge, if nowhere else, in the public square.

@Jiminy - From a European perspective, during the 1930s, the extremes of left and right maintained that liberal democracy was moribund and had to be replaced by fully centralised, command economies. These economies would then be commanded by a dude in a uniform who always seemed to have an election-allergy, regardless of the season.

Am I correct in thinking that when you speak of centralized economies, you are referring to such as America’s Federal Reserve, being run by appointed elites? I suppose you are right, that it did represent the kill switch for traditional liberalism. I guess for someone like me who is so far removed from such power, it is difficult to comprehend just how much influence someone like Powell actually wields upon our individual liberty. It’s sort of like someone who runs the lights and sound system on a stage, you forget about him until he starts messing things up. The trouble is, by that time, it’s already too late, and that it’s all just stage props.

Mass manufacturing and technology has eliminated so many jobs, that a growing share of the population is unneeded for the economy. The lack of work is leading to disillusionment with the culture, and lack of hope that governments can fix it (which I don’t think they can). We are heading to a cultural crisis like occurred at the end of War War I in Germany. In a time of crisis people will follow a savior that makes them feel safe. This could be Nazis or Communists, or something else. But it is a dangerous time. (And to those who think Trump is the cause, you’re wrong - he’s just a symptom of the crisis).

Neo-liberalism and liberalism are completely different things which the author doesn’t seem to grasp.
The first is purely about economics and is very right wing and the second is about human beings and is centre left.

It’s always beneficial to read unorthodox outside-the-box analysis of habitual things. Very intriguing, thank you!

AndyBook, I think everyone is linked, whether manufacturers or consumers. America is currently experiencing one of the lowest unemployment rates, while becoming more and more unhappy, at least according to a recent study.
I’m not so convinced that we’re looking at a racial or ethnic war. Yes, there are such factors as Black Lives Matter (of the left) vs. the alt right (which claims to be neither left nor right), but I think things will escalate as the government continues to eat individual liberty. That is the tension point which is described in the summary, but there are always such tensions in this world. The founders understood that. Utopian ideals are nothing but a mirage in the desert.

@loonyboyx - tbh, I think that he’s on fairly firm ground. Liberalism, properly understood (traditionally understood), is the social contract, political philosopy which gave rise to individualism (Locke et al - classical liberalism). Individual rights in relation to state power; consent of the governed; life; liberty; property rights; free trade - liberalisation of regulations (the Corn Laws!). The government should get out of your face philosophy, basically.
The term gathered more cargo in the US, beginning in the 1930s. This confusion of meanings kind of distorted it.

I can answer most of the political and social issues today with one word: Jews

Why don’t lefties see their total roll reversal by them becoming everything they were against? They preach hate not love by hate speeching 63 million Trump voters as racists-Nazis, long for the old establishment days & resist moving forward & they want speech control after spending generations achieving free speech.

Why do Jew haters call everyone else Nazis?
