As the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded, LA-based psychiatrist Mark McDonald grew increasingly concerned by the negative mental health effects he witnessed among his patients - and Americans nationwide. These negative effects - stress, anxiety, depression, addiction, domestic violence, suicidal ideation - were all directly traceable to the climate of fear being stoked by public health authorities and irresponsibly amplified by national media. These fears in turn drove a hysterical overreaction from government in the form of draconian lockdowns and mask and vaccine mandates of questionable value. But the fear did not abate and quickly took on a life of its own, becoming an unstoppable force in all our lives.
At last McDonald began to speak out, explaining that America is actually suffering from two pandemics: a viral one and a psychological one, a “pandemic of fear” that is in many ways more dangerous and damaging than the virus itself. Rooted in the natural anxieties of women on behalf of their children and families, inflamed and amplified by sensationalistic media, and driven over the top by ham-fisted authoritarian measures from those in power, McDonald diagnoses the country at large as suffering from a mass delusional psychosis. This is not a metaphor. The malady itself is very real. Whether we can regain our collective sanity as a society remains to be seen.

There are other times in history with documented mass delusional psychosis that has also resulted in millions of deaths (nearly 1 million and counting in the US alone). These are generally a result of war and genocide but its all about the propaganda in the end. As a psychiatrist, I’m not sure the author [of the synopsis anyway] is self-aware enough that the sole existence for his profession is the fact that it doesn’t take a deadly novel virus to cause “stress, anxiety, depression, addiction, domestic violence, suicidal ideation”. I remember the headlines of teen suicide after the debut of 13 Reasons Why. I just read an article not an hour ago about how parents of kids who commit suicide due to be sextorted reaching out to one another to help console and also to help spread awareness. Avid consumer of news that I am, I’m not aware of the sudden mass suicides of people confined to their homes. Domestic abuse, yes, but that was already happening and the abusers now had more opportunity. How many medications were on the market before 2020 solely for anxiety and depression; how many programs existed for battling addition? Are there more now? Again, it comes down to the propaganda. A united front from the top down was needed and, as we are a nation that HAS to know all the information before it’s even available, what we got were interpretations, some from people who know (like medical doctors) and some from people who didn’t (like most of the federal leadership). Unfortunately, most people don’t know very much at all about the very basics in virology but we all demanded the information anyway. WE HAD TO BE TAUGHT HOW TO WASH OUR HANDS! The mass delusional psychosis existed before the pandemic. As we careen toward 2024, it will only get worse and it has nothing to do with a virus.

Academics labeled part of it “deaths of Despair” well before Covid and same with the opioid crisis.

Covid was not all bad. It eliminated a great many stupid people who had Covid parties then cried their eyes out to ICU before they drowned on a breathing machine thanks to Covid.

I’m 60 years old and only in the last decade have we been unable to prevent our towns from burning to the ground - at the peak of our knowledge and tech and our cities now burn. Take a look at what is NOT happening for many folks in N Carolina many months after their global warming jacked hurricane - not recovering. Less and less people are recovering after theses ever bigger and more destructive events - Covid was a mosquito compared to what climate consequences are doing. It’s already destroying industrial agriculture with MEGA drought and MEGA floods. Bread basket Russia is giving up on planting wheat because they say there is no money in major grain crops due to climate consequences. Panic over it is coming - mark my words.
