A deep dive into the spectrum of Autistic experience and the phenomenon of masked Autism, giving individuals the tools to safely uncover their true selves while broadening society’s narrow understanding of neurodiversity
“A remarkable work that will stand at the forefront of the neurodiversity movement.”–Barry M. Prizant, PhD, CCC-SLP, author of Uniquely Human: A Different Way of Seeing Autism
For every visibly Autistic person you meet, there are countless “masked” Autistic people who pass as neurotypical. Masking is a common coping mechanism in which Autistic people hide their identifiably Autistic traits in order to fit in with societal norms, adopting a superficial personality at the expense of their mental health. This can include suppressing harmless stims, papering over communication challenges by presenting as unassuming and mild-mannered, and forcing themselves into situations that cause severe anxiety, all so they aren’t seen as needy or “odd.”
In Unmasking Autism, Dr. Devon Price shares his personal experience with masking and blends history, social science research, prescriptions, and personal profiles to tell a story of neurodivergence that has thus far been dominated by those on the outside looking in. For Dr. Price and many others, Autism is a deep source of uniqueness and beauty. Unfortunately, living in a neurotypical world means it can also be a source of incredible alienation and pain. Most masked Autistic individuals struggle for decades before discovering who they truly are. They are also more likely to be marginalized in terms of race, gender, sexual orientation, class, and other factors, which contributes to their suffering and invisibility. Dr. Price lays the groundwork for unmasking and offers exercises that encourage self-expression, including:
- Celebrating special interests
- Cultivating Autistic relationships
- Reframing Autistic stereotypes
- And rediscovering your values
It’s time to honor the needs, diversity, and unique strengths of Autistic people so that they no longer have to mask–and it’s time for greater public acceptance and accommodation of difference. In embracing neurodiversity, we can all reap the rewards of nonconformity and learn to live authentically, Autistic and neurotypical people alike.

as someone with autism i have to say that this is foolish. people that are not autistic or don’t have a loved out that is autistic WILL not read this and even if they did they will not change their way of life to better accommodate people with autism. You can not expect the vast majority of people to change just to better accommodate a minorty. you are better off teaching autistic people have to better adapt to reallity.

@fall19 My young niece just got diagnosed as ASD. So it matters to me. Everyone around her is leaning into new perspectives.
I disagree that people don’t change. There are shifts in the general population: not all people, not in all ways and often late in the day, but change none the less.
The culture wars are really vivid now because they reflect these shifts: shifts strong enough to excite a powerful, reactionary segment of the population who will say, believe and sometimes do anything to stop the shifts.
I agree you have to help people adapt to things as they are but not to reify the limitations of the present.

I’m an autistic adult who has struggled my whole life to integrate socially. I have caused myself great harm by masking and trying to conform, against every fiber of my nature. This has been so damaging I’ve nearly unalived myself numerous times. Thanks to finally discovering I am autistic and connecting with other autistic people, I am finally realizing that there is nothing wrong with me. I am just different and need to embrace myself fully to be my best self and live my best life. This book has received high praise from so many autistic people in my networks. I’m really excited for this one!

FYI, at the time of this comment the format is listed as MP3, but the download was actually M4B, which I am glad to see.
It seems user Fall19 was looking at the issue from a larger sociological bent, rather than the more personal perspective most looking to read this would likely share.

This book is a lifesaver. I can’t believe that comment by Fall19
Trying to say masking is for our own good or some BS. Must have done a lot of autism speaks “therapy”

As someone recently diagnosed as an adult, I’ve only now realized how intense my masking has been for my entire adult life.
This is an excellent Book.
