No one ever mentions Norway, Sweden, Finland, or Denmark when they talk about how socialism fails. What makes some socialist countries fail are stupid authoritarian leaders, like Stalin, Maduro, and “The Donald” for example.

Perhaps the problem is more of totalitarianism and/or authoritarianism. Capitalist countries don’t exactly thrive under those circumstances either. Vietnam isn’t doing awfully, and that’s considered a socialist country. Syria, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Russia, etc are hardly a shining endorsement of how capitalism is wonderful.

I don’t see investing in the citizens or infrastructure of a country as a bad thing. After all the money invested was paid in taxes by those citizens and should be used to make the country stronger, the people healthy in an environment where everyone has a chance. Not much different then a family. Or should the head of the family not look after the others health or living conditions and just let each sink or swim on their own merit.

@abb@outasite.net - U have to admire his balls (in a hetero manner, as well - an inclusive admiration). Just comin’ out & sayin’ “I don’t want to talk about the history of its ideological implementation.” Of course, if he does, he loses.
It’s ideological suicide to even acknowledge that factual historical record. That’s why the validity of the historiographical project itself must be “problematised” - with the consequent privileging of ideological historians; & their accounts given undue prominence. Genocide is quite appropriately fatal for an ideology.
You can’t redeem extreme, failed ideologies. So there’s a psychological necessity of willed, imposed amnesia after every single, catastrophic failure. However, there’s a tension in that these events tend to be quite memorable, to say the very least. This induces Olympic levels of cognitive dissonance in the subjects. “Don’t mention the war, etc.”

The American Left can learn about the socialism the easy way, by traveling to a socialist paradise of their choosing and living there among the natives for some period of time, experiencing it firsthand and not as tourists — or they can do it the hard way, by implementing it in America.
The trouble with the former is that not many can afford it, for number of reasons, and the trouble with the latter is that it’s going to be a one-way trip to a very dark place.

So the book says, that in order to ‘transition from capitalism to socialism’ all you need is government overthrow and the slaughter of all who dissent. Nice. No room for democracy in the dictatorship of the proletariat. :(
