Publisher’s Summary
Alfred Adler (1870-1937) was an Austrian physician, psychotherapist, and one of the founding fathers of modern psychology. In “Understanding Human Nature”, (1928), Adler sets out to acquaint the general public with the basics of Individual Psychology, which holds that the driving force of human behaviour is the individual’s striving for power, partly to compensate for feelings of inferiority.
Each individual’s personality structure finds expression in their lifestyle, their goals and how they strive to attain them, but the individual cannot be considered apart from society as all the important issues of life are social.
The book demonstrates the practical application of psychological principles to the conduct of relationships and the organization of daily life. With reference to the nature of the psyche, Adler looks at different personality types and character traits, and explains how character develops; the emotions, feelings and moods that shape the personality are placed under the spotlight.
The purpose of the book is to identify mistaken behaviours and show how they undermine healthy relationships, in order to gently guide the individual towards adjustment.

Apparently this post, posted by anonymous “guest”, lowers ABB standards of quality (no book anotation etc), so the question is what would be reasonable to do about it — to delete, to edit (add description), to download-edit-repost? There’s also the obvious zero-effort option “don’t do anything, leave it as it is”, and allow ABB standards to erode.

In this late work, “Social Interest: A Challenge to Mankind”, Adler turns to the subject of metaphysics. He argues his vision of society: “Social feeling means above all a struggle for a communal form that must be thought of as eternally applicable… when humanity has attained its goal of perfection… an ideal society amongst all mankind, the ultimate fulfillment of evolution.” This social feeling for Adler is a community feeling whereby one feels he or she belongs with others and has also developed an ecological connection with nature (plants, animals, the crust of this earth) and the cosmos as a whole.

Contrast Freud and Adler’s delusions with the sad humility of Charles Scott Sherrington, who though he knew more physiology of brains than any other scientist of his time, admitted that for him “in this world Mind goes more ghostly than a ghost.”
