One of the ways that people—voters, other politicians, and members of the media—have dealt with the rise of Donald Trump has been to dismiss him as an outlier, treating his irrationality, cruelty, and bombast as marks of his own character rather than signs of anything larger. Lawrence Grossberg’s Under the Cover of Chaos makes that argument impossible. In damning detail, Grossberg here lays bare the deep roots of Trumpism in the broader history of postwar US conservatism.
Rather than a break with some imagined pure, nuanced conservatism, Grossberg shows, Trump’s manic nonsense is actually a continuation, the result of a long struggle between the new right and the reactionary right. What is new, he shows, is that the reactionary right has been legitimated—and has brought its political strategy of sowing chaos into the heart of mainstream politics. From there, Grossberg goes on to analyze the national mood—and to explain how that plays out in the actions of both Trump supporters and opponents—and lays out a possible nightmare future: a vision of a political system controlled by corporate interests, built on a deliberate dismantling of modern politics.

More Conspiring at Theories! Apparently the sky is about to fall in because the Other (who is always bad, wrong, evil, greasy and stinky) is about to bring about the end of days. One of those sexy “nightmare futures” (which the author probably researched in the Hunger Games).
Surely we’ve done all the Trump books now, there can’t be any more? Unless his hair has written a diary?

thank you sartre100.
this is a well-researched, and clearly argued, tome:- which is more than one can say for most of the post-election piffle (from both sides).
it is also less to do with Donald Trump the person, and more to do with where Republicanism has been headed since at least the Goldwater era.
progressives, liberals, and minorities might not like the narrative: but it’s better to face the truth than ignore it.

Look - Woodward has written a Trump book!
Hold my Diet Sprite …

It’s not a “conspiracy” to put Trump in the context of history.
Trump just got on a bandwagon. He doesn’t care where it’s going as long as he’s on top. He reverses himself on policy from one day to the next; they’re just meaningless slogans to him. He’ll sign whatever legislation is put in front of him. It’s the ceremony that’s important, he doesn’t know or care what it means.

I think there’s a fair degree of conspiring at theories when they’re given to conjuring dystopian scenarios in the context of “nightmare futures” and the utter collapse of republican democracy as a form of government. These authors are jumping sharks with sweaty abandon.
I was inclined to think that Trump was unbalanced as well, and it’s a good bet that neither you or I would vote for him (even if we were enfranchised).
However, Trump turned out to be surprisingly effective at delivering for his supporters (the political orientation of the Supreme Court is enormously significant - and he seems to be specifically selecting characters who are not likely to “flip”). That doesn’t sound particularly insane (or, as the author puts it: “manic” and “irrational”); his ability to function doesn’t fit the “unhinged” narrative. Why are we so attracted to facile labels? It’s a little Trumpesque, if you ask me…

Caesar, I fear not enough people will understand your reference to jumping sharks.
As for voting for Trump or not, hopefully you are never faced with such a pathetic cast of candidates.
While I don’t the fact that a Supreme Court appointment is a life time appointment, I don’t think that even Trump’s picks will make that much of a difference.

@TD - Aaay! Everyone loves the Fonz and Happy Days. All of my references hail from a bygone age. I’m so out of date that I’ve become cool again.
With the change of judicial philosophy in the court, all it will take is people or interested organisations bringing relevant or test cases to extend, restrict or strike down Federal Law. You’ll be living in “interesting times”, as the Chinese apparently never said.

@Caesar, I know the feeling about be so out of date, but I’ve fortunately got a couple of kids who feel free to remind me how uncool I am. :-)
I guess there are 2 duffers on the bench over 80, so who knows, Trump may get to stack the deck some more.
As for living in interesting times, well, every day’s an adventure. Then again, if I wanted an adventure I would have joined the damn navy!
