The untold story of how restrictive policies are preventing China from becoming the world’s largest economy
Dexter Roberts lived in Beijing for two decades working as a reporter on economics, business and politics for Bloomberg Businessweek. In The Myth of Chinese Capitalism, Roberts explores the reality behind today’s financially-ascendant China and pulls the curtain back on how the Chinese manufacturing machine is actually powered.
He focuses on two places: the village of Binghuacun in the province of Guizhou, one of China’s poorest regions that sends the highest proportion of its youth away to become migrants; and Dongguan, China’s most infamous factory town located in Guangdong, home to both the largest number of migrant workers and the country’s biggest manufacturing base.
Within these two towns and the people that move between them, Roberts focuses on the story of the Mo family, former farmers-turned-migrant-workers who are struggling to make a living in a fast-changing country that relegates one-half of its people to second-class status via household registration, land tenure policies and inequality in education and health care systems.
In The Myth of Chinese Capitalism, Dexter Roberts brings to life the problems that China and its people face today as they attempt to overcome a divisive system that poses a serious challenge to the country’s future development. In so doing, Roberts paints a boot-on-the-ground cautionary picture of China for a world now held in its financial thrall.

Thankyou @WangLaoshi2020, I was an animator years ago and was offered a studio lead animation job in China and included a European style town accommodation built for westerners. I turned it down due to China’s human rights abuses on its own citizens and also the occupation of Tibet. I’m glad I did with the increase in the micromanaging of social credit, reduction in paper money and the proliferation of nearly all forms of oppression with the rest developing as we speak. Westerners forget that every company is owned by the state, so I would have been working for a film company that in turns is owned by the state, which means I would have been adding to the oppression of the Chinese people by living in accommodation that was built on land cleared of Chinese tenants, by taking a management job from a citizen, by approving of the Chinese states behaviour nationally and globally with all the lives it harms and oppresses.

I lived and worked in China for several years. I was heavily respected, my occupation was respected and I was treated very well. I’ve also worked in many Western countries where I have routinely been told to “go back to where I came from”, ridiculed for not being christian, been held back by jealous white men and underpaid due to my race.
I have no love for ANY government, as I think they’re all the same. I feel sorry for foolish Westerners who think their governments are somehow moral, especially those from the USA, whose government participated in the genocide and enslavement of TWO RACES and are still on the warpath. By supporting Western governments, you are supporting this destruction. I can’t stand it when people try to act like certain government and militaries are good while others are bad.
I would never want to support the daily ritualized gun executions of children in the USA and I think people need to think about what their own government is up to before self-righteously declaring they have worked out what’s right and wrong for everyone else - and surprise surprise, their own country, religion, culture, opinions and race just happen to be correct YET AGAIN…

Thank you WangLaoshi.

@dazart - Commendable & responsible. And you’re not trying to use some contrived pretext to distract from or deny the ongoing genocide of the Uyghur people and others. Because to do so is to support that genocide.
