The election of Donald Trump in 2016, like most of his campaign, came as a shock to many Americans. How could a man so lacking in capacity, so void of any intellectual heft, become the president of the United States? In Troll Nation, journalist Amanda Marcotte outlines how Trump was the inevitable result of American conservatism’s degradation into an ideology of blind resentment. For years now, the purpose of right wing media, particularly Fox News, has not been to argue for traditional conservative ideals, such as small government or even family values, so much as to stoke bitterness and paranoia in its audience. Traditionalist white people have lost control over the culture, and they know it, and the only option they feel they have left is to rage at a broad swath of supposed enemies ― journalists, activists, feminists, city dwellers, college professors ― that they blame for stealing “their” country from them.
Conservative pundits, politicians, and activists have abandoned any hope of winning the argument through reasoned discourse, and instead have adopted a series of bad faith claims, conspiracy theories, and culture war hysterics. Decades of these antics created a conservative voting base that was ready to elect a mindless bully like Donald Trump.

@Alnilam - Why can’t they just report the news instead of trying to tell people how, and what, to think? That’s probably an irresponsibly naïve idea at this stage of the game.
The effort seems to be to colonise the mind and produce morally dead, materialistic automatons. Just deliver an audience to their advertisers, then our role is that of manipulable consumer of tat that no one really needs. Don’t stop to think whatever you do!

Speaking of the terms “conservative” and “conservatives”, it is very important to know the origin, where exactly they came from:
“The Progressive policies of the Woodrow Wilson era quickly gave Progressivism a bad reputation. FDR was a proud Progressive who had served in the Wilson administration, but running as a Progressive had become politically unwise by 1932. As Charles Kesler writes in his book “I Am the Change”: “FDR suggested, helpfully, that they ought to call themselves conservatives, a designation they were loath to accept because it sounded … vaguely un-American[.] … Robert Taft, ‘Mr. Conservative,’ was still insisting he was a liberal in 1946.” The people who wanted America to continue to live according to the Constitution at first resisted taking FDR’s helpful suggestion. They finally gave in when they decided that the Progressive theft of their name had succeeded…”

So, let’s see how those “The road to hell is paved by” and “Be careful what you wish for” thingies work in historically proven reality:
PHASE ONE: your leaders assured you that the paradise on Earth can be built only by eliminating the political opposition, all those “deplorables” and “bitter Bible and guns clingers”, and your side of course all are such pure innocent babies and angels, so you you start de-humanizing your opponents by calling them “scum” and any other names under the sun.
PHASE TWO: you start calling for censorship, thought control and physical extermination of the opponents, likely eagerly participate yourself, now it’s easy to do as the opposition have been sufficiently de-humanized.
PHASE THREE: your merry gang, having run out of sculls to crack and opponents to shoot, suddenly start looking at you with the same all too familiar glint in their eyes, suddenly for them you are not revolutionary enough, or whatever the reason, at this point a horrible thought may crawl into to your mind “maybe those right wing guys were right all along, warning me about the impending dangers, in particular that the Left have no limitations and no brakes of any kind”, oops, too late.

And there’s only so much anyone can shared and seeded at anytime.
Even if 0 was the files I ever share, on any site, it wouldn’t actually have mattered, unless you belong to a private site that has a ratio to maintain. It apparently matters to you but that’s your malfunction, so you should seek help.

About the comments about sharing 0 audiobooks. I think people are missing that the stat being referenced doesnt mean you are freeloading. It doesnt mean you dont seed. It just means you have not ripped and uploaded your own audiobook torrent. Mine is at 0 as well, yet I seed several terabytes a month. Even private sites with ratio, are talking about seeding ratio, not being the original uploader of a torrent. My seeding ratio on my downloads regularly reaches in multiple digits (ie, i may of shared something 40x more then I downloaded). So that stat of zero is meaningless.
About this book, while I dont think the full title is particularly productive, the synopsis makes alot of good points. And i say this as a republican and what would be called a conservative. MOST republicans are not big trump supporters believe it or not. And this synopsis pretty accurately describes exactly how Trump won the election. Now, I havent listened to the book, so I cant speak for the actual book. But based on the synopsis, it sounds like it would be worth the read. As long as the synopsis is accurate, the book must make alot of valid points. Points ive been making for the last few years. Just because trump was the best of the two available options, doesnt mean he was a good option or all republicans like him. He was the best of only bad options unfortunately. And his super power has always been doing exactly what the synopsis says.
