How far are Americans willing to go to force each other to fall in line?
According to the establishment media, the intelligentsia, and our political chattering class, the greatest threat to American freedom lies in right-wing authoritarianism. We’ve heard that some 75 million Americans who voted for Donald Trump represent the rise of American fascism; that conservatives have allowed authoritarianism to bloom in their midst, creating a grave danger for the republic.
But what if the true authoritarian threat to America doesn’t come from the political right, but from the supposedly anti-fascist left?
There are certainly totalitarians on the political right. But statistically, they represent a fringe movement with little institutional clout. The authoritarian left, meanwhile, is ascendant in nearly every area of American life. A small number of leftists - college-educated, coastal, and uncompromising - have not just taken over the Democratic Party but our corporations, our universities, our scientific establishment, our cultural institutions. And they have used their newfound power to silence their opposition.
The authoritarian left is aggressively insistent that everyone must conform to its values, demanding submission and conformity. The dogmatic left is obsessed with putting people in categories and changing human nature. Everyone who opposes it must be destroyed.
Ben Shapiro looks at everything from pop culture to the Frankfurt school, social media to the founding fathers, to explain the origins of our turn to tyranny, and why so many seem blind to it.
More than a catalog of bad actors and intemperate acts, The Authoritarian Moment lays bare the intolerance and rigidity creeping into all American ideology - and prescribes the solution to ending the authoritarianism that threatens our future.

“Establishment Republicans like Liz Cheney, and many more who are less vocal than she is, share the horror that liberals on the other side of the party divide have of any assertion of a popular will that does not conform to the elite consensus.”

As a person from a former Soviet country who is interested in the US politics, I find the red scaremongering of the American right so bizarre. They seem to not know history or political theory at all, and call everything they don’t like socialism or communism. But I guess elites always use the ignorance of masses for their own gain.

Mria-As a person from a true Communist country, you probably wouldn’t understand how the LEFT it trying to draw the US closer to the ways of the USSR. Being from a free country, I can see it happening. We have people like Bernie Sanders who believes people should throw all their money they make into a big pot and split it up equally. Most of us know that this is a poor plan. Why try to make something of your life if you are going to make the same $ as your neighbor, who has no education and works 34 hours a week? Or the people who have no job at all? Everyone wants FREE health Care, Free this, and Free that. Intelligent people understand that NOTHING is actually FREE. SOMEONE ALWAYS has to pay for it. And when you raise minimum wage to $15, you will be paying MORE at McDonalds, MORE at the grocers, at the gas station, at the car lot, for your rent, for your babysitter. People who make $15 before will want $20 an hour. Those who made $30 will want $50. The owner of a restaurant will still need to clear so much % and will need to make more as well. As will every other business. So now your $15 won’t be enough and you will now need more. But maybe you need to look up the definition of SOCIALISM to understand the meaning. I am betting that Ben Shapiro is more intelligent and has more schooling than 97% of the posters on this site. And for those who say the rich should ‘pay their fair share’ in taxes. I think EVERYONE should pay their ‘fair share’. So let’s ALL pay a flat 10% of what we make. Those making $15K or those making $1M a year. And if you feel the need to pay MORE, that you should be able to write a check to the IRS and give what ever donation you want.

@sable663 I did suspect that you may be a russian troll.
If someone with no education can make that much money, then you can say “pay me more, or I’m taking my skilled labour elsewhere”.
It’s a rising tide lifting all ships scenario. You’d also be wealthier, or able to live an easier life by making the same amount of money doing an easier job.
It’s coming across that you just don’t want anyone else to have opportunities to be better off.
July 31st, 2021
Jack_Milad-Huh? I did suspect that you may be a quite a crazy if you thinking that I believe in Socialism. If so, you are gravely wrong. Those who work hard in life shouldn’t be punished by making up for those who either fail in life or who are less fortunate in the ‘brain department’. I work my ass off putting in 65-70 hours a week away from home. My wife works her ass of as well putting in 10-15 hours a week overtime. Are we rich? No. Are we better off than those making MW? Yes. Yet there are many people who think they must work a MW job their entire life while having 3-7 kids even though they can’t afford healthcare for themselves and expects everyone else to chip in to pay for their HC and their existence. No thank you.
July 31st, 2021
@sable663 you work that hard, and apparently it’s both a point of pride and bitterness. Inflation has outpaced wages, and you don’t want to go back to a time when one parent could support their family doing a 9 to 5?
Working hard is admirable. You should be paid adequately for your work. But that doesn’t mean that people working menial jobs (especially the type of jobs which have been deemed ‘essential’ during this pandemic, especially) deserve to struggle financially.
You clearly aren’t doing too well financially for all that hard work, otherwise this type of website would never cross your radar. It wouldn’t need to. You’re being overworked and underpaid, and you want to take it out on everyone else who makes less than you. Not people who make more, because you see yourself as a temporarily embarrassed/inconvenienced millionaire. All this talk about reducing tax for the wealthy is something you feel might be within your grasp one day. But here you are, unable to afford audiobooks. Wanting them for free, because capitalism and buying them isn’t working out great for you.
July 31st, 2021
@sable663 and a flat tax rate of 10% would be great. Though the billions lost from taxing millionaires and billionaires means you’d need millions more people earning enough to make up that loss. Which means raising minimum wage.
Essentially, your mindset is why so many people have higher tax brackets. Because you don’t want anyone to make as much money as you, but you also want people with less money than you to pay a more significant amount of money (to them) in taxes. While at the same time making excuses for multi billion dollar companies who decide to dodge paying taxes. It seems the only scenario in which you’re happy here is if someone poorer than you is getting screwed over.

“Left Weaponized America’s Institutions”. Sure. Meanwhile, for the last 20 years McConnell has been packing the federal courts, up to the Supreme Court, with right wing ideologues.
The “institutions” Shapiro is whining about are TV stations and universities. Which have no power, and the right has been demonising intellectuals for decades.

ctd: “And they have used their newfound power to silence their opposition.”
If only that were true.
“Everyone who opposes it must be destroyed.”
Okay….? So, by “destroyed” does he actually mean “laughed at”? Or just despised? Because not seeing much destruction here, though if anyone is up for it, Shapiro would be close to the top of the list.
These guys, with loudest megaphone on the planet, keep complaining about being “silenced”. In books. On radio. On TV. On every social medium. Not a day goes by without more speeches about being “sileced”, “cancelled”, “destroyed”.
It’s ludicrous.

Sable663 - Just want to point out that, in my province in Canada, most of our health care IS free, and my work benefits cover most of what isn’t. Also, minimum wage? Just a hair under $15.
And we’re fine.

This tripe is laughable How afraid is Ben of his own shadow? There are no boogeymen, people! But there’s money in fear and hate. Exactly as Steve Bannon said…people are so gullible if you play to their base emotions.
July 31st, 2021
I have not read the book so can’t speak to the content.
But I believe you would have to be an ostrich with your head in the sand to not see censorship of views, self silencing of opinions/questions, distrust of main stream media due to subjective reporting, and disgust with government. Or maybe you do and choose to ignore it.
July 31st, 2021
The usual pompous halfwits who call themselves “left” and are about as “left” as the Tory 22 committee at it again. Anyone who dares see them as they REALLY are are “evil” Karree - people like you LIVE on your “fetishes” thats why you’re “left”
Notice how these rabid hypocrites refer constantly to “fetishes” ? Its why they signed up for the woke-opolis
July 31st, 2021
@gilit: I see a lot of whining and conspiracy stories on right wing media.
July 31st, 2021
As usual, Mr. Shapiro is on point. Much to the dislike of the haters.
Ben’s truths are like Kryptonite to the racists and leftists.
Excellent read. I think I’ll give this book to all my lib friends and watch their heads explode.
July 31st, 2021
@apollo yeah, I’m sure you have a lot of lib friends.
July 31st, 2021
@Gilit Notice you didnt get a long winded reply from the Nuts on the Right. Its because you can’t argue the truth. My family overseas also have universal healthcare and many other social programs and their countries are doing better than us down here in the lower americas.
July 31st, 2021
@Basileus5 you’re all ove the place with that one mate. The left aren’t left, but they’re left because they talk about fetishes?
Hey, remember that couple of years when all the republican started using ‘chuck’s as an insult? Weirdly enough, it was around the time they discovered that word that cuckhold pornography started gaining popularity. Because projection, of course.
@apollo60 that’s nice dear, you just keep telling yourself that.
July 31st, 2021
That should have said ‘cucks’. Cheers for that, autocorrect.
July 31st, 2021
I was thinking “chuck” sounded a bit too Coronation St.

Ben Shapiro whines about Lefty Authoritarians while Trump tries to overturn an election and seize power like a “Banana Republic” tinpot dictator. Republicans should look in the mirror.
July 31st, 2021
why isnt this book in the fantasy tag where it belongs? someone made a mistake.
July 31st, 2021
“But what if the true authoritarian threat to America doesn’t come from the political right, but from the supposedly anti-fascist left?”
Ben should be writing alternate histories like Harry Turtledove.
@sable663- what is with the anti-socialists on this site screaming Sanders is going to steal from all these hard working Americans to give to all the leechers and welfare queens?
You are on a file sharing site taking the intellectual sweat and labor from authors! The poor at least have contributed, themselves or by family, to the infrastructure of the nation they live in.

It’s always funny to see that people think America has ever been a “free” country.

Aw little benny has tried to write a book. What a clever little boy he is!
Personally, I like that Audible is providing more fiction for the 3 to 5 years age group.

Mria
They used “the ignorance of the masses” to gain power and start the reign of terror under Socialism/Communism.
Ignorance displayed by Toads like
Jack_Milad, Gweilo, bookwormmama, and the rest of the Gomers, gave them the power to destroy Millions by their ignorance.
August 1st, 2021
@apollo60 wasn’t aware I’d managed to destroy millions simply by not being a conspiracy theorist right wing loon who sucked trump’s arse. Good to know.
You seem to be labouring under the belief that I’m a socialist or a communist for some reason. I’m not. But I’m also not in favour of the rampant unchecked capitalism and keeping a boot on the necks of society’s most vulnerable and poor either. So if you’re going to paint me into a box of extremes where I either need to agree with you or be called a communist… well, paint me red, baby!
August 1st, 2021
God, How I hate these right-wing spewers of hate.
They try to dress it up in logic. Just engage your critical thinking skills if you have any.
That’s all.
August 3rd, 2021
@Sable, your first post I could not have said better myself.
@Jack_Milad at the slight risk of sounding rude, your complete absence of rudimentary economics leaves me awe struck.. Perfect example of the dunning-kruger effect. I really don’t want to rip your posts apart, just wanted to say you really need to read more.
August 3rd, 2021
Thanks, I have looking for this. One of the greatest though leaders of our time.

@apolo60
Ben’s on point? He sure sounds like he’s sitting on a pin.
August 4th, 2021
@ockymofo by all means, I encourage you to go in depth and tell me how trickle down theory is the only economic approach that’s been proven to work. And how countries which tax wealthier people at a higher rate and give financial aid to the poor are all on the verge of destitution.
August 4th, 2021
@ockymofo or tell us about how all the areas with a higher minimum wage don’t have any skilled workers, and how inflation has pushed up all the prices of everyday goods.
I’d love to hear that. Becase all evidence points towards a more progressive (with hints of socialist schemes) economic approach working pretty damn well.
August 4th, 2021
Well, here in Caesar’s benighted, menacing republic of shadows, we go in for a sustainable taxation system. This is to encourage business, incentivise investment & encourage foreign enterprise. Have to say, it’s more supply-side in economic orientation and it seems to work pretty well for us. One has to always plan for potential capital flight. Since our neighbours went full-on Brexit, the approach has attracted even more. It generates resources for essential programmes. We’ve never gone in for the socialist or extremist-type govts. I think it’s about learning from others’ mistakes.
Recall Confucius - by 3 methods we may learn wisdom: 1st, by reflection, which is noblest; 2nd, by imitation, which is easiest; and 3rd by experience, which is the bitterest. Avoid no. 3, I reckon.
You’ll love this. There was an English chap once being interviewed by William Buckley, who definitively informed the interviewer that my own benighted Hibernian race could never develop peacefully or democratically. He probably wasn’t aware of Buckley’s origins, but the wily old interviewer gave him lots of rope in any event, and the arrogant English chappie didn’t fail to use it. There’ll always be an Ing-er-land…

@OccultDemonCassette
> It’s always funny to see that people think America has ever been a “free” country.
It may, or may not be funny, but it’s beside the point.
The point is, what would be *your* vision or idea of a free country? (assuming you have such an alternative in mind).

Thanks for posting this Fact Based book covering the authoritarian Left. In reading the comment section it is clear that many commentators actually NEED to listen to this book with an open mind. It’s sad how people like nexincarnate feel the need to post such Brain Dead comments about a book written by a very intelligent young man who graduated at the top of his class at Harvard! My God, he had to interview with nexincarnates Hero, Pocahontas AKA Elizabeth Warren. She actually was so impressed with his ability to defend his conservative principles that she did not block his admission into Harvard and he was only 18 years old at the time. So Please spare me your Libitard Claptrap and take the time to go into your bedroom, cover your head up, stick your thumb into your big Silly Mouth and LISTEN to this Important audiobook. You Libitards may actually Wake Up and learn something about the Despicable movement of which you are truly a part of!
