The story of the most successful political party in the world, and a nation made in its image.
Since 2010, the Conservative Party has presided over countless corruption scandals, blundered its way through a pandemic and trapped Britain in a cycle of permanent dysfunction. This has coincided with four election wins in a row, each one with a larger share of the vote than the last. How?
The strange dissonance between the Conservatives’ destructive record in government and their record of victory – which has seen them suffer only seven major defeats in the last 150 years – is one of the defining riddles of British politics. Tory Nation sets out to solve this puzzle. With dazzling clarity and insight, Samuel Earle explores the roots of the current crisis and the real reasons for the Conservatives’ success, from their ruling class origins in the eighteenth century and their disproportionate influence on the British press to their stranglehold over national identity. He also sheds light on the Conservatives’ historic appeal among the working classes and why the Labour Party so often disappoints.
Tory Nation describes the making of Britain through one party’s astonishing staying power. It’s only by reaching into our history, Earle argues, that we can understand how we got here – and how we can find a way out.

A riddle wrapped in a watercress sandwich.
Disraeli reoriented the party & increased its appeal to the British working classes - the franchise had been extended, so the party adapted.
The attraction for poorer people was an enhanced focus on imperialism as a fundamental part of their identity. All parties must know the most effective buttons to push. The migration of the Red Wall might be a latter-day manifestation of that phenomenon. As for Brexit & the Boss Class, while all the EU employment rights/protections & industrial relations legislation are gone, Bosses & grandees retain their tasteful châteaux in France. Cui bono?
Also, when it comes down to it, related institutions, such as the monarchy, have an enduring appeal for British people. It’s tied in with deference & the “caste” system.
They seem to be your natural party of govt.
Interesting upload.

Not quite all of us, thankfully.
Even some of the regular pub bores have had enough of these cretins. Shouldn’t be long till they’re out.

The tories, that is. It’ll take another generation before the royals are loaded into the trebuchet

Oh, of course not all people. However, republicanism remains quite niche over there, I think. There seems to be a certain ceiling for it. The monarchy is likely to endure. It’s an identity thing for the largest part of the pop. Even the soap opera aspect appears to be a draw.
As for the tories, they just have a stronger base of support. Without Scotland, labour is struggling. With the prevailing political landscape, it’s not even that labour can win an election so much as the tories will have to massively lose it. (Defeats such as 1830 or 1997.)
