It’s difficult to believe that there was ever a time when a POTUS would be willing to deliberately mislead the American people.

“A POTUS… willing to deliberately mislead the American people”?
Pentagon Papers cover United States’ political and military involvement in Vietnam from 1945 to 1967.
That’s Truman to LBJ, followed by Nixon during whose mandate they were released.
And yet, despite not being covered in the Papers, only Nixon actually committed treason in Chennault Affair - by colluding with a foreign power to extend the war so as to win elections.
