A new progressive generation is on the rise in the United States, reflected in the mushrooming rolls of the Democratic Socialists of America (90,000 mostly twentysomething members), Marxist explainers in Teen Vogue, and perhaps most famously of all, the youngest woman ever elected to Congress, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The Rise of a New American Left is the first book to look closely at this new politics. Propelled by interviews with AOC and the other key figures and organizations that have shaken up American politics, the book includes portraits of groups like Democratic Socialists of America, the Sunrise Movement, and Justice Democrats, explaining who they are, where they come from, and what they want. Investigating the panoply of strategies employed by the new movements and their relationships to politicians from Bernie Sanders to Nancy Pelosi, the book describes how the generational focus on insurgent electoral campaigns both aims to transform the Democratic Party and threatens to be captured by it.
Written with panache by a member of this rising generation, this book immerses the listener in a youth culture the likes of which hasn’t been seen since the Sixties.

AOC is not a radical just a progressive not unlike FDR our last good POTUS for the people.

She’s also really stupid. Some of the stuff she says…geez.

@plasticnapalm: FFS. Based on what? facebook memes?
“Ocasio-Cortez attended Boston University, where she double-majored in international relations and economics, graduating cum laude.”
She didn’t just make up her school out of whole cloth or scrape through with a GED.
Watch her performance in committees and tell me she’s “stupid”.

America’s “left” is every other western country’s “centre-right”

Even if AOC got into high office, she would be another Obama. With no political pressure from the populace, and massive pressure from organized corporations (who oppose the endorsed programs of the populace), means that the system will go nowhere.
The only reason why FDR (a conservative), enacted progressive policies such as The New Deal, Glass-Steagall, and etc, is because there used to be strong labor unions, medium-strong socialist and weak communist organizations that were able to apply massive political pressure. FDR saw that people were no longer willing to tolerate those conditions, which was brewing a revolution. So he enacted these programs purely to save capitalism from itself. Without those unions and socialist/communist organizations, he would’ve continued the crony/unfettered/unregulated capitalism, or whatever people like to call it, the oligarchic system. There are two lessons to learn here: 1. Those progressive policies did save capitalism from itself. Those programs shuffled a ton of people into the middle class, with a safety net for everyone. This stopped the revolution. 2. Even if this was good for many people for a while, you can see how it turned out. Within 4 decades, the capitalists/oligarchs undid all of it. And here we are again. With the same fight on our hands. Except this time, labor unions and socialist and communist organizations are practically non existent (the small independent moves by labor unionization are not able to deliver system change).
So what I’m saying is that even if the “new left” were to get into head office, little would change because of the lack of political pressure from the populace and the massive political pressure from corporations (who are very capable at punishing those in head office). And even if there were significant changes via the en-action of progressive policies where upgrades in living standards would follow, they would be undone within a short period. And the same fight will have to be repeated by the upcoming generations. And here’s the catch: The time for this fight is limited.
The progression of AI, robotics and automation will render giant numbers of workers’ existence as no longer an asset, but a liability. Jeff Bezos talked about what he believes will follow, which is that a lot of people will be sent to work in space (e.g. like the TV series “Expanse”). But billions of people cannot be sent up there (if this sounds exciting to you, people will not be sent on a thousand year journey to colonize an earth like planet. People will be sent to uninhabitable planets such as mars (which is akin to living in a prison), to make the capitalists/oligarchs more money).
The only way to secure our future, is for a fundamental change to happen. The power balance needs to be shifted, which can only happen with a socialist revolution (a democracy). One that no longer allows a small minority (the .1%) to make all of the decisions. And for that, several things need to happen. 1. Good faith conversation needs to take place. Rather than tit for tat responses, those that make people go on the defensive, people’s legitimate fears need to be addressed. People become racist, anti gay, anti socialist (anti their own interests) and etc for a reason. You’re not going to be able to force people to change by attacking their person and calling them deplorables and etc. You’re only disuniting people further, and building a strong resistance against yourself. Of course, it’s a lot easier to attack people. It’s a common human condition (and it’s immediate gratification), but it’s only playing into the tactic that the financial elite use to divide us (and it has been a very successful tactic). A conscious effort not to follow that road needs to take place. As Russel Brand says, it needs to come from a place of love. Engaging in good faith conversation can start with something as simple as asking “why?”. 2. People need to be reminded on the class war battles that their forefathers engaged in. How everything that still benefits them to this day, was achieved by those battles (many were killed by the capitalists/oligarchs). The 40 hour work week, better wages (which have completely detached from productivity), safer work environment, social security/pensions, the abolishment of child labor and etc. People need to be reminded how better living standards are gained. Which is class war. Not hate, racism and etc. 3. Explanations for some of the previous socialist experiments’ failure need to be front and center. A lot of people believe that it was purely due to the socialist policies (and there were legitimate failures). But it was mostly the external factors. The capitalists/oligarchs follow the “domino theory”, which says that if a socialist country is allowed to succeed, it could spread. Since all of the previous socialist countries were 3rd world, they had massive barriers to overcome. And with the power that the western world holds, they were able to do a lot to prevent their success. Such as by cutting them off from trade (which is very important in a globalized world). Particularly the trade of technologies. As well other tactics, such as sabotage/military war. 4. Successes need to be shown as well. The upgrades to living standards that followed. The significant increases in life expectancy, education, healthcare, housing and etc. Things that capitalist/oligarchic 3rd world countries are unable to achieve at a reasonable pace, but the socialist ones did (and how that reverted upon re-establishing capitalism, e.g. the book titled “The Shock Doctrine” by Naomi Klein). How a country that is socialist/capitalist and on par in development, produces significantly better living standards if it is socialist: https://sci-hub.mksa.top/10.2190/AD12-7RYT-XVAR-3R2U (but since people will not read studies, videos might be a better choice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEHYeeRCtVI ) 5. The errors of some of the previous socialist experiments need to be explained and how those are no longer relevant, particularly in developed countries. Because it has analyzed its failures and evolved. And what it has in store now: It’s not going to be a top down structure where the capitalist is replaced with the state capitalist. It’s one that instates a direct democracy at work, and a direct democracy on the policy level. A small minority (whether it is the oligarchs or the bureaucrats), cannot make all of the decisions. And by the control of their workplace and state policy, workers get more power than the state (just like the oligarchs have it now). That it’s also not a communist system (this can only happen when AI, robotics and automation progress. Where personal incentives are no longer based on material rewards - meaning it’s not a system that abolishes inequality, it’s just not to such an extent as in our oligarchic/capitalist system. The Bezoses and Musks of the world will still exist).

@AudioBookBay12311: “And even if there were significant changes via the en-action of progressive policies where upgrades in living standards would follow, they would be undone within a short period.”
The reason for that, in the USA, is the unlimited amount of money that corporations are allowed to use to support politicians and parties that follow their lines. They can spend BILLIONS on PACs that swamp the media market. Or billionaires just directly control the media, all of Murdoch’s networks rabidly support policies that benefit the 1%.
Other democracies have problems, but their public debate isn’t so one sided.
So yesterday on being finally confirmed as House Speaker, McCarthy said his first act will be to defund the IRS, so it cannot audit the rich. Thus serving his donors. The rest is theatre.

I’m half convinced the people calling Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stupid have gotten confused and are actually thinking of Marjorie Taylor Greene. Seems like the kind of opinion which might be held by someone who struggles with a very basic concept like ‘names’.

Well that’s disgusting. And no surprise that I didn’t see that reported or mentioned anywhere.

“So yesterday on being finally confirmed as House Speaker, McCarthy said his first act will be to defund the IRS, so it cannot audit the rich.”
You completely missed that one. The rich can hire an army of lawyers, and they know that. They will never get money from the rich. The 80,000 agents are going after all the middle and lower class businesses because they know they cant defend themselves. Biden said he would not raise taxes, what this IRS funding is, a major tax raise for every business owner. This isnt about making money, I read of a guy who got audited over $600. That audit must have cost $5000 or more. There is another reason to be doing this, because it is definitely not about money, as they could never recover the $80 Billion he is paying the IRS to do this. I hope McCarthy buries this back in the gutter where it belongs.

@Hogweed You’re a sucker if you believe that.
GOP has been defunding the IRS since Reagan. Less than 1% of millionaires are audited, because it just takes too many manhours, even though it would earn billions. The IRS doesn’t get a commission on what it brings in
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/irs-sets-the-record-straight-130049197.html
“The 80,000 agents are going after all the middle and lower class businesses” Sez who? The billionaires whop support the GOP?
https://home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/jy0918
“any additional resources—including any new personnel or auditors that are hired—shall not be used to increase the share of small business or households below the $400,000 threshold that are audited relative to historical levels.”
Anyway, the funding was already passed. McCarthy is just grandstanding, has no power to cancel it.
