In 2016, a United Nations report found the UK government culpable for ‘grave and systematic violations’ of disabled people’s rights. Since then, driven by the Tory government’s obsessive drive to slash public spending whilst scapegoating the most disadvantaged in society, the situation for disabled people in Britain has continued to deteriorate. Punitive welfare regimes, the removal of essential support and services and an ideological regime that seeks to deny disability has resulted in a situation described by the UN as a ‘human catastrophe’.
In this searing account, Ellen Clifford - an activist who has been at the heart of resistance against the war on disabled people - reveals precisely how and why this state of affairs has come about. From spineless political opposition to self-interested disability charities, right-wing ideological myopia to the media demonisation of benefits claimants, a shocking picture emerges of how the government of the fifth-richest country in the world has been able to marginalise disabled people with near-impunity. Even so, and despite austerity biting ever deeper, the fightback has begun, with a vibrant movement of disabled activists and their supporters determined to hold the government to account - the slogan ‘Nothing About Us Without Us’ has never been so apt. It absolutely disgraceful what the Conservative government of the UK has inflicted on people who are disabled.
Under the new Labour government 1997 to 2010 many people were finally given the option of benefits or work. Benefits paid significantly more that than the minimum wage at the time which ranged from £3.00 to £6.20 over that time span. Many people, especially the young decided that grafting in labour intensive Jos in factories, warehouses and construction sounded like hard work, which it was, so opted for a life ‘on da social’ which paid much better. Free housing, no need to pay council tax, income tax and national insurance tax were part of the package, and if you had children that significantly increased income. And any disabilities such as ‘bad back’ ‘anger management issues’ anxiety and depression and drug and alcohol addiction were disabilities that paid handsomely.
A single mother with 3 kids, anxiety and depression and a boyfriend with a bad bad back, anger management issues who was an alcoholic/drug addict living in either social housing or privately rented accommodation could expect to earn around £30000 minimum but upto £60000 was achievable especially if children kept being produced and if any child had any kind of disability, such as ADHD then these earning could be higher still.
Where as a working married man of the same age with 3 children on the minimum wage would have to pay rent and council which averaged about £500 could expect around £50pm in child benefit. And earn a wage of £13-15000pa.
Disabilities expanded to include a daily allowance of £6 for beer tokens for alcoholics and drug maintenance programs like methadone, subutex and valium. Which increased their earnings further and reduced their crippling daily discomfort that prevented them from working, but not enough so they could actually get a job.
Then personality disorder disabilities were added to the list so people who were so obnoxious due to their personality, which was a disorder and therefore a disability couldn’t possibly do a job where they may encounter other people so they got paid just about the same as a minimum wage would and then their rent and council tax on top of that.
It was great. And the jobs these disabled people would otherwise have been forced to do were simply outsourced ro Eastern Europeans such as Poland who joined the EU in 2004 and no longer had work in warehouses and factories in Poland for pennies who were very keen to do the jobs in the factories and warehouse the British simply wouldn’t do, preferring to earn far more on benefits than those jobs would ever pay.
It was one big party ! All the English were on the dole and all the immigrants did the work. Except refugees, of which there were many millions so traumatised by wars in most African and Islamic countries they were disabled aswell.
And then the conservatives government came about, voted in by all the racist white working families that thought it unfair that they had to work increasingly long hours amid deteriorating conditions and pay while their disabled neighbors partied most nights and days, could get interest free loans from the social fund which was unavailable to working people to go on holidays to Spain at least once a year.
And there you had the beginning of the war on the disabled. Which has continued since 2010. Coupled with increasing focus on what right wingers call ‘benefit fraud’ where usually a disabled person would work for cash in hand as general labourers for example.
These people were then deemed fit for work and thrown off benefits for doing nothing more than building walls, gardening etc for just £20 a day to make ends meet.
The conservatives are a far right party and the right always keep pushing further into fascism so the war on the disabled accelerated to include people with mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, moodiness and substance abuse.
Many were forced to stop using drugs and alcohol or have the benefits reduced or even stopped.
Others were subject to invasive and humiliating examinations and interrogations which was against their human rights.

@texmex ceasar is someone I interact with on reddit. He is a refugee from some African country that isn’t considered a war zone, Ghana or Gambia possibly. He frequents r/hivaids as he is also hiv positive, his social media depicts a few pictures of him in front of a few nice cars with a very pretty lady although I suspect he is a homosexual. Driven into a feral rage at the country he had traveled so far to get to, only to be told he wasn’t a real refugee and deported.
He’s somewhere in an EU country, likely Germany where he is tolerated. But the British took away his dream of living in britain, free aids medicine, house money..everything. and when that wasn’t forthcoming he hatched a plan to gain EU citizenship then use Europe’s uncontrolled freedom of movement to legally come to Britain as an EU citizen and make himself right at home. But brexit stopped that.
Now if he try to come he may end up on a one way flight to Rwanda. And that’s the last thing he wants, to be back in Africa. With aids.

Most people didnt recieve anywhere near that, and using outliers who would only be entitled to that much because they were severely disabled, or because they were receiving money for children is disingenuous nonsense.
Seems you definitely read and mindlessly regurgitate whatever The Sun and Daily Mail tell you, even when they themselves end up having to print reactions on a lot of this stuff, and are constantly being called out for their inaccuracies.

Not in 1997. It took a few years but by 2004 there was oh so many benefits one could live very well.
Rent and council tax alone exceeded 200 a week. Then add in incapacity benefit for alcoholism or heroin abuse, upto 76 disability living allowance if someone was too obese to walk to the shops 38 child benefit for 2 kids and this is just for starters, £6 a day for alcohol allowance if someone enjoyed parrying every day and it racks up.
That’s why there was a benefits cap of 26000 introduced as one of the first acts of the conlib government in 2010.

Take a gander at that list of benefits. Incapacity, for ‘bad back’ for example was £109. Child benefits and tax credits came to upto £100 a week for 3 kids, and you got money for every additional Child, not to mention free everything like dental work opticians prescriptions etc none of which was available to a working man on minimum wage.

Out of work benefits, in work benefits, everyone was on benefits. Even the EU economic migrants could claim Child benefit for their kids back home !
I don’t know why you keep mentioning the sun and mail as that’s how people traditionally got their news as most people in the early 00s didn’t even have dial up Internet let alone news apps on their Nokia 3310s.

Of course not EVERYONE received such generous sums. Those who attempted to stand on their own two feet and not be reliant on the state in any way didn’t get very much.
A single young man who had a mortgage and no kids would receive about £40 a week in job seekers allowance and about £20 on average council tax relief. That’s it. Absolutely zero help towards keeping his mortgaged roof over his head for the first 9 north’s of any benefits claim. And even then only the interest payment. That’s if you still had a roof over your head after not paying it for 9 months.
Contrast that to to the couple next door in rented housing with one or both patents dependent in substances with 3 kids who were fat or had a bad back or anxiety and depression.
The rent and council tax alone was at least £150 a week. Child benefit and tax credits were 100, incapacity and dla for a joint claim was about 300 depending on how well they played at it, free drugs in the form of subutex, methadone and valium and alcohol allowance means they didn’t even have to pay to party hearty and usually making the poor guy next doors life an even bigger misery than it already was.
‘Anxiety and depression’ just as ‘bad back’ were the biggest scams going. Extremeky difficult to prove one way or the other, they didn’t kook very anxious or depressed slumped over in a heroin haze or dancing the night away pissed out their heads. Not the sort of anxiety and depression their neighbours who had to listen to that racket every night bit still had to get up for work in the morning felt. Did they go crying to benefits agency for incapacity benefits ? No they got on with it.
Then of course the interest free social fund loans of upto a 1000 a year and you had a very lucrative lifestyle. At the time these were all well known. But I’m better you wernt even there, you sound like ceasar whoes very vocal on brexit yet doesn’t even live in the uk.
The worst thing about this carry on was the fact that it was so widely abused that the conservatives went way too far in clamping down on it, into the realms of cruelty yes. Making someone in a wheel chair look for work is pretty cruel but can’t they operate a computer, customer service/call center jobs ?

Would you like to read mine on how the British brought technology, medicine and civilisation to Africa and how things were much better for the people under colonialism than it is now ? Or how things were under apartheid in South Africa than they are now including eye witness testistimony from survivors of brutal Farm attacks committed by blacks against the afrikaans who grow their food ?

There are even the necessary (legal) definitions provided, and context besides. Not going to rehearse them here for fairly obvious reasons.
As to the “personality down to a tee” line here: consider, “embittered Afric homosexual with Hiv/AIDs driven by hatred of refugee status, fleeing a fake war to scrounge benefits & only wants to rape white women?” That’s the prevailing Brit view here.
