Late in life, William F. Buckley made a confession to Corey Robin. Capitalism is “boring,” said the founding father of the American right. “Devoting your life to it,” as conservatives do, “is horrifying if only because it’s so repetitious. It’s like sex.” With this unlikely conversation began Robin’s decade-long foray into the conservative mind. What is conservatism, and what’s truly at stake for its proponents? If capitalism bores them, what excites them?
Tracing conservatism back to its roots in the reaction against the French Revolution, Robin argues that the right is fundamentally inspired by a hostility to emancipating the lower orders. Some conservatives endorse the free market, others oppose it. Some criticize the state, others celebrate it. Underlying these differences is the impulse to defend power and privilege against movements demanding freedom and equality.
Despite their opposition to these movements, conservatives favor a dynamic conception of politics and society–one that involves self-transformation, violence, and war. They are also highly adaptive to new challenges and circumstances. This partiality to violence and capacity for reinvention has been critical to their success.
Written by a keen, highly regarded observer of the contemporary political scene, The Reactionary Mind ranges widely, from Edmund Burke to Antonin Scalia, from John C. Calhoun to Ayn Rand. It advances the notion that all rightwing ideologies, from the eighteenth century through today, are historical improvisations on a theme: the felt experience of having power, seeing it threatened, and trying to win it back.

“conservatives favor…violence, and war” and have a “partiality to violence”…
To think, the book is probably filled with cogent insights like these!
As it begins with Edmund Burke and the French Revolution, Burke didn’t oppose it because he loved violence. Quite the opposite, he saw the nascent extremism, predicted widespread violence and was proven correct by the bloodletting of the Terror. He had supported the earlier American Revolution (as a Westminster MP) for the opposite reasons. The settlers were actually advocating for “freedom and equality” - not merely freeing people’s heads from their bodies.
We shouldn’t pathologise the guy for that. Also, it’s impossible to diagnose the dead.

…and you prove my point. Extremists enter a state of heightened arousal at the merest suggestion of “culling”.

This book is the biggest piece of socialist propaganda nonsense I have ever heard. Biased sources, partial facts, and reaching speculation. Written to entice those on the fence not to inform anyone with real facts. No wonder the left is eating itself alive.

As usual, Leftists always accuse the Right of their own pathologues :-D

After reading the summary above, it is clear that Corey Robin is either completely ignorant of conservatism or he has no interest in looking at the actual history. I think one would find a better survey on Wikipedia (and for those who don’t know better, that’s NOT intended to be a compliment). Russell Kirk, for example, was more Libertarian and the opposite of Hillary Clinton who represents fairly extreme forms of international interventionism.
“…conservatives favor a dynamic conception of politics and society–one that involves self-transformation, violence, and war. They are also highly adaptive to new challenges and circumstances. This partiality to violence and capacity for reinvention has been critical to their success.”
If Robin is comparing Conservatives to Libertarians, than I can at least understand this (as a knee-jerk reaction), but as a Conservative, who has read a book or two, I can’t help recognize the false premises and generalizations underlying such conclusions.

THANKS Sartre. Much appreciated.

This is a late comment on the above discussion, but I just want to point out that Corey Robin does not actually pathologize right-wing thought or right-wing thinkers like Edmund Burke. I actually detect a great deal of respect in the book even though Corey Robin is coming from the left.
