Imagine a world where every single man, woman, and child obeyed the Ten Commandments. There would be no murder and no theft. We wouldn’t need armies or police. It would be a world free of lies, tyranny, and cruelty.
The Ten Commandments are humanity’s recipe for a good world—and it’s a recipe we’ve had and handed down for 3,000 years. Even atheists have to admit that God’s Ten Commandments are a valuable moral code. In The Ten Commandments, noted ethicist and popular talk show host Dennis Prager provides a rich, in-depth analysis of each commandment, showing readers how powerful these 3,000-year-old rules are and how following them will better our world.

No murder or theft.
But still plenty of rape, slavery, racism, sexism, child abuse, etc.

Does he not realize that 3 of the commandments are unconstitutional in the US and only 2 of them are have real laws?

Thanks I love Prager great post!!

But why do they have to find expression in direct, positive law? The framers of the Constitution envisaged that individual churches would inculcate morals (Natural Law, if you like) and the secular states were to regulate legal relationships in the public square/sphere. Hence the Separation of Church and State. A very wise provision. Involvement in the secular power corrupts religion.
This long-standing balance has only entered a problematic phase in the last few decades, as formal/organised faith is beginning to decline (only in the West, of course). Nowadays, quite a large number of us receive our moral instruction from…?

Peace, prosperity and abundant flourishing to you and yours, marco.

The fallacy of reason which beleves that the sole source of morality is religion is unfortunately alive and well. How intellectually bankrupt one is to believe such hogwash.

You’re an independent thinker and I respect your views, mklangelo (I’m also grateful for the Sistine Chapel and all the great work done for the Church); but in the Judeo-Christian cosmology, objective moral values can be grounded with certainty. An immutable universal code of conduct can be agreed and relied upon; we discover and derive it based on religious principles. We rely upon it implicitly. We base virtually everything upon it. The vital essence remains the same. The vacuous vortex of situational ethics is not remotely capable of grounding morality. We’ve seen the chaos and horror which ensues when regimes reject this objective standard of morality.
(Although I wouldn’t be surprised if I was intellectually bankrupt - I’m already verging on financial bankruptcy, so it’s an impending twofer).

@caesar963
The Sistine Chapel should fill the most base character with awe. It is a treasure of this Earth! But that doesn’t make religion the sole source of morality. Given how absolutly sadistic your god is, I’ll pass. I can do all the good in world without some senile deliquent hurling thunderbolts down on Humanity. It just doesn’t wash.

I like what Sam Harris said on the source of morality.
“most people that have plucked chickens in history have been religious, simply because most people in history have been religious, but that certainly doesn’t mean that I have to be religious in order to pluck a chicken.”

Harris is a total chicken-plucker! Renowned for it. It behoves him to attribute the source of his morality and how it has structured societies, civilisation, cultures, legal order, human rights, language and ethical behaviour.
It’s the standard by which we measure and judge civilised, humane conduct. We’re all a product of it - like it or not.
Unless Sam has a new, entirely independent system of morality in his back pocket (or down the back of the sofa) then his position is unsustainable and absurd.
Then there’s his disquieting chicken fetish…

Thank you very much.

The greatest proof of a moral God that demands righteousness of his creation is just how offensive any mention of Him, or his law, is to our rebellious nature. Every armchair philosopher crawls out of the woodwork to bring unsupported accusations against a system that proves that we just don’t measure up on our own merit.
“How dare you say I need a warning system!” They shout, rushing blindly to the precipice.

As to the chicken thing… once a road has been paved, those following only has to travel it, not repave it.
