What distinguishes history as a discipline from other fields of study? That’s the animating question of Sarah Maza’s Thinking About History, a general introduction to the field of history that revels in its eclecticism and highlights the inherent tensions and controversies that shape it.
Designed for the classroom, Thinking About History is organized around big questions: Whose history do we write, and how does that affect what stories get told and how they are told? How did we come to view the nation as the inevitable context for history, and what happens when we move outside those boundaries? What is the relation among popular, academic, and public history, and how should we evaluate sources? What is the difference between description and interpretation, and how do we balance them? Maza provides choice examples in place of definitive answers, and the result is a book that will spark classroom discussion and offer students a view of history as a vibrant, ever-changing field of inquiry that is thoroughly relevant to our daily lives.

Back in the days before the wheel or fire - when I was still teaching - I kept a folder of essays to share with the livelier year 10+ students who might be thinking of going on to tertiary study.
I like Stanley Fish ‘Is there a Text in this Class’ for English and Literature in general; Michael Lewis ‘The English Verb’ for all sorts of language studies; Fred Brooks ‘The Mythical Man-Month’ for both Computer Science and Business Studies.
I won’t say which text I used for History, because there is a better one freely available on the Internet these days: Larissa Grollemond ‘There is no Such Thing as the Dark Ages’.
So my position would be that where the Sciences are mainly about discovering the facts, and the Arts are mainly about interpreting the facts; History is almost uniquely about denying the facts.
I suspect Maza’s book is very readable, she is excellent on the radio and streaming services. But I’ve not heard her say anything which isn’t in Grollemond, and certainly nothing which has changed my partisanship.
Excellent choice of upload Guest, thank you.

“History is about denying the facts” - Absolutely the perfect partisan definition for someone who actually maintained that the Brutish empire did not commit genocide.
Thx, Guest.
