An accessible, balanced chronicle of how the Israel-Palestine conflict originated and developed over the past century. The Shortest History books deliver thousands of years of history in one riveting, fast-paced listen.
The ongoing struggle between Israel and Palestine is one of the most bitter conflicts in history, with profound global consequences. In this book, Middle East expert Michael Scott-Baumann succinctly describes its origins and charts its evolution from civil war to the present day. Each chapter offers a lucid explanation of the politics and ends with personal testimony from Palestinians and Israelis whose lives have been impacted by the dispute.
While presenting competing interpretations, Scott-Baumann examines the key flashpoints, including the early role of the British, the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948, the Six Day War of 1967, and the Trump administration’s peace plan, pitched as “the deal of the century,” in 2020. He delineates both the nature of Israeli control over the Palestinian territories and Palestinian resistance—going to the heart of the clashes in recent decades. The result is an indispensable history, including a timeline, glossary, and analysis of why efforts to restore peace have continually failed and what it will take to succeed.

Israel can be a representative democracy for all it’s citizens or a Jewish ethnostate, not both.

May each side be able to have visionary leaders, and then there may actually be peace, because right now the current crop on both sides is a miserable lot.

It’s not a conflict, it’s colonization, but what do you expect from a western writer

Would an “ethnostate” have non-ethnic representatives in it’s governing body?
Colonization? Why, because the Jews moved back into their historic land? Wasn’t it colonized by the arab peninsula dwellers when they expanded?

Not even Arabs can live in peace with other Arabs.

Quote from the book:
“When the Arabs demanded their political rights, particularly the right to some form of representative government in what they saw as their own country, they were effectively told by the British that their rights were subordinate to those of the Jewish population of Palestine and that an Arab-dominated legislature or national council would not be allowed.”
Apparently the author failed to mention the 1923 Palestinian Legislative Council election, which was giving 10 seats to Arabs and 2 to Jews (the remaining 11 were British officials). It was snubbed by the Arabs, and Palestine was the only British colony without such an institution. And it happened at the time when the British became lukewarm about the Jewish immigration, which the book admits.
