The Gulag Archipelago: An Experiment in Literary Investigation is a three-volume non-fiction text written between 1958 and 1968 by Russian writer and dissident Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. It was first published in 1973, and translated into English, and French, the following year. It covers life in what is often known as the Gulag, the Soviet forced labour camp system, through a narrative constructed from various sources including reports, interviews, statements, diaries, legal documents, and Solzhenitsyn’s own experience as a Gulag prisoner. In Russian, the term GULAG is an acronym for Main Directorate of Camps.
Following its publication, the book initially circulated in samizdat underground publication in the Soviet Union until its appearance in the literary journal Novy Mir in 1989, in which a third of the work was published in three issues. Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, The Gulag Archipelago has been officially published in Russia. An abridged fiftieth anniversary edition was released on 1 November 2018 with a new foreword by Jordan Peterson.

Is this where that mental midget, Alexandra Occasional Cortex, got her ideas about a Gulag for Conservatives in America?
Solzhenitsyn’s great work was to expose the horrors under Soviet rule, not to emulate them. .

Frederick Davidson is the most irritating narrator I have encountered. His whining pseudo-upper class english accent is to me unbearable. Which is a shame as he narrates some of the best literature out there.

I fully agree. Frederick Davidson (aka David Case) has long since passed his “best before” date. Nevertheless, I appreciate the full version of this great book. The abridged version (foreward by Jordon Peterson) is also excellent with an outstanding narrator.

it should be marked as jail fiction, or bed time horror stories for junior high

I agree with pooloo60. The fact that Soviet Russia was bad leads us to the inevitable conclusion that Trump is the best thing ever.

@chummley
“The work is based on the testimony of some two hundred survivors, and on the recollection of Solzhenitsyn’s own eleven years in labour camps and exile.
