  It’s not religions that are intolerant. It’s men who embrace violence in the name of religions. To be fair, it would be really easy to make the case that Christianity is the least tolerant religion and has done more harm in spreading “the good word” than any other.

  They’re actually not. Which is good, because various parts of the Koran are self-contradictory.

  That said the really bad parts are more useful for power mongers. And many Muslims have never read the Koran, or have read it in languages they do not speak. Kinda like what the Roman Catholic Church did prior Vatican 2, but with more explosions, murder and slavery. Or the same amount, but now instead of in the 15th century.

  Ignorance is very useful for power mongers, because it allows the Koran to say whatever they find convenient that week. Hard to debate a text written in a language you don’t speak, especially when you may not be able to read. Specifically talking about Western Africa with that reading bit.

  Modern Islam is often fundamentalist and terrible, but its because of ignorance broadly, and ignorance being a useful tool for despotic jerks, rather than people reading and studying Islam and following its teachings literally.

  I will agree that, before the 15th century, it was a crime punishable by death to take the Koran literally. They got rid of that rule and things certainly have gone down hill since, but the issue can’t mainly be people taking the religion too literally if many Muslims, and often the most violent among them, have never read the Koran in the first place and can’t actually read at all.

  All religions are pretty terrible, Islam is just a more useful terrible religion if you’re a war mongering despot who needs to motivate 14 year olds into wearing bomb jackets.
