Socialism is tempting, seductive, alluring.
It comes in many forms and speaks in many different ways.
It appeals to people who value fairness, who value freedom, and who value security.
It comes in many varieties, sometimes clothing itself in the dress of nationalism, sometimes in the garb of environmentalism.
Yet there is one single, unifying feature – subjugation of the individual to the collective.
While Americans have always been skeptical of socialism, even in the progressive and New Deal eras, that is beginning to change.
Large numbers of Americans now express admiration for socialism, and similar numbers are critical of the free enterprise system.
The problem is particularly acute among America’s young people.
This is not the first time we have been here.
In 1977, when America was deep in an economic malaise, Ronald Reagan gave a speech in which he wondered, “Whatever happened to free enterprise?”
Noting that the free enterprise system “for 200 years made us the light of the world,” he warned that freedom is “never more than one generation away from extinction.”
He took the lead in preserving it for the previous generation.
It is time for this generation to take up the torch.
Reagan framed the defense of freedom as first and foremost a communications challenge.
Today, a field of study known as cultural cognition theory understands that our political choices are guided by certain values.
Americans generally fall into one of three value groups, valuing fairness (egalitarians), freedom (libertarians), and security (conservatives) respectively.
‘The Socialist Temptation’ is an attempt to meet the modern version of the communications challenge posed by Ronald Reagan.
There are reasons why socialism appeals to each of these value groups.
‘The Socialist Temptation’ tackles these reasons head on and responds with a vigorous case for free enterprise as better matching American values.

Socialism does not come offering bread lines, secret police, or gulags. It sells itself as a decent and uplifting creed. It appeals to our belief in fairness, in kindness, in standing up for the little guy — even, sometimes, in patriotism. Iain Murray takes those claims seriously. Instead of using socialism as a swear word, as conservatives sometimes do, he properly analyzes its appeal. When a lot of people, even on the right, are falling for arguments that ought to have been discredited long ago, this is a vital task — especially so, perhaps, during the authoritarian spasm that has followed the coronavirus infections. Restoring freedom is going to be a grueling and arduous task. Here is the instruction manual. —Daniel Hannan

Socialism promises everything and delivers nothing. Then it forces the individual to be part of it or perish. Socialism is for the emotionally weak and lazy.

Something for Free!??
Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it?
bosk is on point!
The cheese is never free. The only ones that benefit are those who placed the cheese there.
What happens when you run out of OPM (other people’s money)? Look to Venezuela, Cuba, China, and dozens of other countries that have tried it.
Misery, Subjugation, Poverty, Chaos, and Death.

Americans are hilarious, their Idea of Socialism is ridiculous, anything left of the extreme right is trumpeted as socialism, wanting a healthy free society where you won’t go bankrupt if you get sick is SOCIALISM, I got news for you guys, that’s not Socialism, All Americans need to hear is the word and the equate it with Communism, Socialism is NOT Communism, I’m not saying it’s good or bad but look at the results of helping the people who need help up a step, it benefits the entire Country

Holy cow is there ever a sh*t ton of these “warning books”. The capitalist pig dog overlords getting mighty nervous to shell out for these low grade propaganda writers. They’ve wasted their money. Nothing can stop what is coming. Too greedy. went to far. I hope the internet is still working when Zuckaburg is strung up like Mussolini & Bezos & his family are dragged down to a scummy basement & put up against the wall and shot full of holes dead like the Romanov’s. You have many tens of millions of young men unemployed or lowly employed and they have NO HOPE FOR A FUTURE NO GOOD JOB = NO WOMAN NO KIDS = NO HOPE NO PURPOSE = NOTHING TO LOSE & FUELED BY TESTOSTERONE & RAGE RAGE RAGE. As if these stupid cheap books will help. It’s just another insult on the pile. You’re past concessions & past reforms. What’s that saying the Americans have about their liberty tree? That’s what is coming & it’ll be apolitical because the entire system screwed them. I can’t wait to see that tree get watered.

Some important answers might be right here, staring you in the face. One of such questions might be “What exactly I am doing here?” (except chasing other members’ actions and comments and crapping on everything you happen to dislike). A quick check shows “community member, doing nothing for the community” — https://audiobookbay.lu/member/users/index?&mode=userinfo&username=apnea — i.e. your objectively measured personal contribution is exactly zero, and somehow it comes paired together with your apparent high self-esteem. Instead, try doing something good and useful for the community, for those disadvantaged and unfairly treated people you pretend to like so much, learn how and upload for them some books, argue in favor of ideas contained in those books, endure craploads of evil nonsense from the likes of you, and then maybe you will start getting somewhere.

Scandinavian countries seem to do well with socialism, at least last time I heard. They are all very stable politically, have healthy economies, and the the majority of people have a comfortable lifestyle I believe.
“Interestingly enough, the top seven happiest countries in the world for 2021 were all Northern European countries. Finland took top honors—for the fourth year in a row—with an overall score of 7.842, followed (in order) by Denmark (7.620), Switzerland (7.571), Iceland (7.554), the Netherlands (7.464), Norway (7.392), and Sweden (7.363).” https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/happiest-countries-in-the-world
No citizen has the “Sword of Damocles” aka health debts, hanging over their head.
There are degrees of socialism, and those countries mentioned above seem to have hit upon the sweet spot. If you asked the average citizen if they’d like to “Americanize” things, they’d think you were crazy.

God help Americans (because the government won’t help) when/if A.I. takes a huge percentage of jobs.
Social revolution will be in the wind.

The “socialism sucks” crowd will have to explain how so much of the last decades of poverty reduction, like 70% or 80% of it, has occurred in countries which say they are working to meet socialist principles
but they can’t, lol and lmao
