In The Reactionary Mind, Robin traces conservatism back to its roots in the reaction against the French Revolution. He argues that the right was inspired, and is still united, by its hostility to emancipating the lower orders. Some conservatives endorse the free market; others oppose it. Some criticize the state; others celebrate it. Underlying these differences is the impulse to defend power and privilege against movements demanding freedom and equality - while simultaneously making populist appeals to the masses. Despite their opposition to these movements, conservatives favor a dynamic conception of politics and society - one that involves self-transformation, violence, and war. They are also highly adaptive to new challenges and circumstances. This partiality to violence and capacity for reinvention have been critical to their success.

On a historical point, as it begins with Edmund Burke & the FR, Burke didn’t oppose it because he loved violence. Quite the opposite, he saw the nascent extremism, predicted widespread violence and was proven correct by the bloodletting of the Terror, the atrocities in the Vendée, the subsequent wars, and the rise of Napoleon (more tyranny & wars).
He had supported the earlier American Rev (as a Westminster MP) for the opposite reasons. The settlers were actually advocating for “freedom & equality” - not merely freeing people’s heads from their bodies.
We shouldn’t pathologise the poor dood for that.
As to “conservatives favor…violence, and war” and have a “partiality to violence” - that’s a little on the narrow side, in analytical terms. When we look at the 20th century - the bloodiest in history - the extremes of left & right both took an enormous toll in blood.
A rather transparent exercise in “Hey, look over there! An effing squirrel!” misdirection-type deal.

All political systems entail some violence.

Gotta love the comments of people who start to debate with a summary.

Fair enough as far as that goes, Mria. But the bk was uploaded 3 yrs ago & isn’t new. It’s also possible, prima facie, to point out some fairly major flaws with the stated thesis - the shop window, as ’twere. Good point, all the same.

“We shouldn’t pathologise the poor dood for that.”, he said, in defense of a philosophy which pathologizes the poor…

You’ll note that Burke was actually condemning & rejecting a “philosophy” which slaughtered the poor - in the Vendée, and elsewhere. Inconvenient truth, I know.
And I’m defending what, exactly, when I condemn the mindless violence of both l & r? Which means, via your own clumsy reframe, that you’re defending such genocides.

when you aren’t a communist, you are against emancipation of the poor? why do statists always equate free market conservatives with elitist plutocracies? i’ll listen to it to at least try and understand the strange ideas the far-left fantasize about

The books insist on its criticism of the “conservative” defense of hierarchies, both public and private, that I feel tempted to remind leftists over here how most (if not all) socialist experiments were experiences of hierarchies, the “intellectual vanguard” party leads the revolution in steed of the proletariat, and as such, the role of “voice for” rapidly becomes “master of”, forming their own bureaucratic aristocracies, like George Orwell, said in his classic Animal Farm “All animals are equal but some are more equal than others”.

Conservatives are prone to turn to violence sooner, but they do not have a monopoly on it.
I hear many of these American 2nd amendment cultists imply or make threats about blowing away libtards, the woke (whatever that means) in a twisted prideful manner. This is why they are the easiest cannon fodder.
All patriots are dupes. In the last 10-15 years many American bleeding heart liberals have bought firearms and instruction in firearm safety, maintenance and proficiency. Once you start killing people’s family they will, sooner or later, kill yours back.
