The largest planned economy in history is not the USSR, but the combined might of Amazon and Walmart
For the left and the right, major multinational companies are held up as the ultimate expressions of free-market capitalism. Their remarkable success appears to vindicate the old idea that modern society is too complex to be subjected to a plan. And yet, as Leigh Phillips and Michal Rozworski argue, much of the economy of the West is centrally planned at present. Not only is planning on vast scales possible, we already have it and it works. The real question is whether planning can be democratic. Can it be transformed to work for us?
An engaging, polemical romp through economic theory, computational complexity, and the history of planning, The People’s Republic of Walmart revives the conversation about how society can extend democratic decision-making to all economic matters. With the advances in information technology in recent decades and the emergence of globe-straddling collective enterprises, democratic planning in the interest of all humanity is more important and closer to attainment than ever before.

Super profitable private central planning - for the Walton family, up there on Walton mountain. “Good night, John-Boy!” - “Good night, armies of dissembling accountants & lawyers!”

Dumb. More right wing brain rot. Walmart has no interest in socialism. They wont even pay their employees 15 an hour.

It all depends on what “democratic” really means. I find that whenever anyone, left or right, says “democratic” they really only mean the times when the people vote their way.
> “Walmart has no interest in socialism. They wont even pay their employees 15 an hour.”
Those two things have absolutely nothing to do with one another because, as supporters of a higher minimum wage of constantly pointed out, minimum wage laws aren’t socialism.

^ oops, I meant “have constantly” not “of constantly”

walmart is what happens when you win at capitalism, it’s the opposite of socialism?

Some people are misrepresentation the title.
The book is not about a right wing conspiracy, although I understand why it seems like that.
It’s about making the case for a new type of planned economy using the type of computing and information gathering systems that previous planned economies had no access to. It uses Walmart and Amazon, which already use these strategies to “plan” their business as examples.
Very interesting.

For one, those two things do not have anything to do with one another. Two, that’s not really what this book is about.
