Matrilineal societies are more common than we appreciate, existing under a variety of different social and environmental circumstances, and in some cases for thousands of years.
From around seven thousand years ago, there are signs that a small number of powerful men were having more children than other men.
In societies where women left their own families to live with their husbands, marriage customs came to be informed by the widespread practice of captive taking and slavery, later influencing laws that alienated women from systems of support and denied them equal rights.
There was enormous variation in gender and power dynamics in many societies for thousands of years, but colonialism and empire dramatically changed ways of life across Asia, Africa, and the Americas, spreading rigidly patriarchal customs and undermining how people organized their families and work.
In our own time, despite the pushback against sexism, abuse, and discrimination, even revolutionary efforts to bring about equality have often ended in failure and backlash. But The Patriarchs is a profoundly hopeful book—one that reveals a diversity to human arrangements that undercuts the old grand narratives and exposes male supremacy as no more than an ever-shifting element in systems of control.

They don’t mention that one little part about how men, mostly white men invented, built & maintain the modern world that made motherhood 100 times easier & giving birth 1000 safer for mom & child. It’s the inventions of white men that made education possible.
Lets discuss the 900lb elephant - Since patriarchal white men had all the power & called all the shots who freed woman? Since you women were our slaves (y’all never shut up about it) then by your own definition any freedom you had was because us white men let you have it. You would think women would be on their knees thanking their husbands and especially sons for freeing them, but NO it’s bitch bitch bitch. As far as I’m concerned, the next time there is war, you women can go be the cannon fodder for once while I stay home a sleep with your best friend & half of the field hockey team. Some where around seven thousand years of wars and battles and then we will be even on that count. When you are in your fox holes in some jungle 6000 miles from home you can pine for the day your tour is over so you can enjoy being home, barefoot and pregnant.
I won’t lift a finger for any woman without being paid. They are not getting it both ways from me.
I’m still waiting for all the free woman with their well paid, but abstract careers, to chip in to buy a gold plaque thanking recent generations of white men for giving y’all girls your freedom.
It’s not like you had a Spartacus type slave revolt & freed yourselves. We gifted women their freedom & they are pretending otherwise. This civilization was built on finite fossil energy which is past peak. It won’t just be the material progress that will be ending & rolled back.

This is the stuff I’ve been studying for decades when I’m not building or working shut-downs on western Canada’s energy, petrol chemical & pulp & paper infrastructure. Between peak oil (master resource) and runaway climate change the future is going to be very unpleasant for most people. Life has already been sucking for more and more people in the west for 20 years running, hence the increasing super reckless behaviour with drugs, drinking, gambling etc etc and prescribing people with clinical depression very powerful anti-psychotics (off label). If you consider not feeling anything at all a cure for depression then anti-psychotics are for you.

Hey apnea, by your own logic American Blacks should be kissing the feet of white males for demonstrating great generosity in freeing their enslaved asses. I’m sure that would go over great. Anyways, I’m going to give their book a listen. It’s a curious fact that in our most ancient civilizations, like Egypt, Sumer or Crete, men and women had essentially equal social and legal rights. Why things changed over time? That’s a good question.
