Who is Satan in the New Testament, and what is the evil that he represents? In this groundbreaking book, Elaine Pagels, Princeton’s distinguished historian of religion, traces the evolution of Satan from its origins in the Hebrew Bible, where Satan is at first merely obstructive, to the New Testament, where Satan becomes the Prince of Darkness, the bitter enemy of God and man, evil incarnate. In The Origin of Satan, Pagels shows that the four Christian gospels tell two very different stories. The first is the story of Jesus’ moral genius: his lessons of love, forgiveness, and redemption. The second tells of the bitter conflict between the followers of Jesus and their fellow Jews, a conflict in which the writers of the four gospels condemned as creatures of Satan those Jews who refused to worship Jesus as the Messiah. Writing during and just after the Jewish war against Rome, the evangelists invoked Satan to portray their Jewish enemies as God’s enemies too. As Pagels then shows, the church later turned this satanic indictment against its Roman enemies, declaring that pagans and infidels were also creatures of Satan, and against its own dissenters, calling them heretics and ascribing their heterodox views to satanic influences.

NICE!

I noticed years ago how of the three great faiths built on the rock of the Torah, only one finds a devil there.
Still, if you hunt long enough, you can’t help bumping into yourself eventually.
Thanks for this.
(For those intrigued by the thesis, Peter Stanford also did a useful book along the same lines).

I noticed - oh, many yrs ago now - that ideological types expediently misrepresent religion to dubiously correspond to their narrow, doctrinaire precepts. They disappear upon refutation, however. So, no harm done.
The author, quite correctly, “traces the evolution of Satan from its origins in the Hebrew Bible” - so, shock, horror, the genesis was the Hebrew Bible itself. Specifically twice within the Torah; Satan being the adversary, or opponent.
Equally, within Islam “Iblis” frequently appears in the Quran, being the personal name of the Devil and counterpart of Satan in Judaism and Christianity. “The Great Shayāṭīn” naturally being the American political operation/entity, with the designation “Little shaitan” reserved for Israel.
Ah, there we are, that’s all 3 of them, then. But, thanks for playing all the same.
And for the toxic, political ideologue? The reality of their own particular devil is to be found within themselves & their 20th century Dark Age, of course.
Thanks, mein Gast!

How a great number of indigenous civilisations were destroyed in the name of religion…

Well, civilisations competing & in conflict for the actual purposes of power, resources, territory & fear.
Recall also that this new religion in many instances brought genuine civilisation for the first time. It outlawed child sacrifice (human sacrifice, generally); abolished torture & murder as mass spectacle & entertainment; introduced charity as a concept (giving without expectation of reciprocity or gain); educated the poor; provided medical care; introduced a refined, civilised system of objective ethics, with human life accorded prime, intrinsic value & dignity; it was no longer taught that the disabled were “cursed” but were dignified rights-bearers; women in marriage were able to give free, public, express, witnessed consent to the union, as ensouled beings in their own right, their assent was no longer to be ignored or disdained.
The beneficial reforms & alterations, which we now take completely for granted, were far more extensive, and reached across all areas of society & culture, throughout the centuries. We can all point to departures from the introduced standard, but the point is that the standard itself had been introduced, by the new religion.

Slight mixed bag here. Very well researched but to the point that it felt like the author was cramming in the same point twice over, just to make sure the research wasn’t wasted.
Topic wise - more about how Christians, Jews, and Muslims dehumanise and ‘other’ each other, allying whichever religion with the demon to vilify etc. While you can piece together the history behind the character of the Devil, it takes a lot of reading between the lines.
