Gogol is possibly the least optimistic genuinely funny writer there ever was.
Of course, he was writing during the closing years of the Romanovs.
He is precisely the author we need for these times.

These stories were written some 80 years before the February Revolution. Bit of a stretch to call that the Romanov’s closing years.
