apnea, the person making the claim that commonly accepted science is accurate doesn’t NEED to cite anything, it is the person making off the wall claims that are not scientifically backed by anything, as this author does, that needs to provide evidence. If you read the reviews for this author on Amazon you find that he has basically created a cult of personality around himself, brow beaten parents into taking their children off needed meds and is also an anti-vaxxer. Maybe I should have lead with that. To me, if a doctor is an anti-vaxxer they don’t understand science enough to be a doctor in the first place.

Autism has been around forever. In the past, these children would die as babies, be institutionalized for life, or be label as mongrels, deaf mutes, or any number of names. As a father of a child that is severely autistic, I empathize with those seeking answers to something that probably has no answers other than DNA markers. However, blaming it on vaccines is a step backwards. Those who are anti-vaxxers have that luxury. If they saw what Polio or Smallpox can do, they would beg to be vaccinated.

As someone with autism, I’m all for hearing the load of bs that this book will doubtless be. Having said that, it’s still my intention to read it with an open mind. An open mind, and an open Google Scholar tab.

@apnea, the burden of proof does not lie with the person pointing out that this is an extremely minority opinion not supported by scientific consensus NOR by the autism community. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proofs.
Desperate parents will pay anything for a pinch of hope and someone or something to blame. It’s understandable and can make people feel more in control. There are plenty of hope predators selling snake oil (this was Wakefield’s motivation), and plenty of poor science about with terrible methodology and motivated reasoning in these domains. So it is wise to employ weapons-grade critical thinking and be extra sceptical when it comes to extraordinary claims that happen to accord with widespread wishful thinking or partisanship. There are distinct methods for assessing these claims, which begins with high school source-checking and synthesising skills.
Personally, I’m not going to give this the time of day, as if I did that for every highly dubious claim, I’d have no time left. We can and do distribute this assessment work across critical thinkers, and very occasionally extraordinary claims are found to have some merit. The synopsis for this sets off all the usual alarm bells for scientific scepticism, so good luck if you dive in, and remember, if you really really really want the conclusion to be true, you need to be really really really aware of the cognitive biases that can make accurate assesment difficult - please also acquaint yourself with the counterevidence that is the current consensus amongst scientists and self-advocates before you come to a conclusion that does not hurt your child or any other. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
Also, if you thought that if the person saying this to you was autistic would take away from the “objectivity” of what they were saying, then the problem really is you.
