Since its first screening in 1968, Dad’s Army has been Britain’s best-loved
TV comedy series. The bungling adventures of the Walmington-on-Sea Home
Guard during World War II, preparing to defend their country with pitchforks
and a butcher’s van, still top of the ratings whenever they are shown on
television.

Dad’s Army ran for nine years and became so popular it was made into
a film, radio series and even a stage musical, and the cast appeared in a
Royal Command Performance.

Bill Pertwee appeared as Air Raid Warden Hodges in the very first
episode of the TV series and here tells the colourful story of the many
hilarious and exciting incidents both on and off the set. He presents an
intimate portrayal of all the show’s stars, including Arthur Lowe, John
Le Mesurier, Clive Dunn, John Laurie, Arnold Ridley, James Beck,
Ian Lavender, Frank Williams, Edward Sinclair and, of course, himself.

“The Story of Dad’s Army” is packed with behind-the-scenes anecdotes
and will be treasured by all those who love and enjoy the classic
comedy the series. It includes the original recording of the theme
tune: ‘Who do you think you are kidding, Mr Hitler’ sung by Bud
Flanagan.
