For decades, environmentalists have told us that using fossil fuels is a self-destructive addiction that will destroy our planet. Yet by every measure of human well-being, from life expectancy to clean water to climate safety, life has been getting better and better. How can this be? The explanation is that we usually hear only one side of the story. We’re taught to think only of the negatives of fossil fuels, their risks and side effects, but not their positives-their unique ability to provide cheap, reliable energy for a world of seven billion people. And the moral significance of cheap, reliable energy is woefully underrated. Energy is our ability to improve every single aspect of life, whether economic or environmental. If we look at the big picture of fossil fuels compared with the alternatives, the overall impact of using fossil fuels is to make the world a far better place. We are morally obligated to use more fossil fuels for the sake of our economy and our environment.

“The Tragedy of the Commons” (1968) by Garrett Hardin trumps this.
If you own you’re own space station, you’re welcome to burn any fossil fuels you import. Godspeed. But the sort of individual liberty that permits individuals to plant pork CAFOs with unregulated sewage pond next-door, or for individuals to burn fossil fuels and collectively reduce human carrying capacity of the planet by hundreds of millions, and for thousands of years, ISN’T ethical or moral, and is worthy of disdain, contempt and ostracism.

It’s literally unbelievable that things like this are still being written.
Damn our primate brains!

The argument of the Tragedy of the Commons is powerful and persuasive, but don’t we repudiate it in the way we actually live our lives (importation of goods which we can source at home; exportation of recyclable material across the world to China, which in some cases, are promptly incinerated or deposited in landfill; air travel, etc.)?

Yet more conspiracy/alt right propaganda, not worth the energy consumed by listening to it.

“The Moral Case for Fossil Fuels” or “F You, and the Rest of the Planet!”

drkmater - Except that you’re basically saying that if you can’t afford “clean energy”, you don’t deserve to live or advance your civilization since most countries would never get anywhere near an industrial revolution if they were forced to use solar and wind instead of coal and petroleum.

This book should be in the fantasy section….

“We are morally obligated to use more fossil fuels for the sake of our economy and our environment.”
Total insanity.
Only in America.

Anti-Semitism is not cool.

Anti-Semitism? I agree, of course, but I don’t see it…

Hey ThoughtCriminal - I was referring to a previous comment attacking the author, it has since been deleted, so now my last comment looks slightly insane. Thanks for the books.

gymp66 - Personally I think it belongs in the children’s fiction section

Fascinating book! Just finished hearing it. @Hogweed: we won’t run out. The science and truth of my statement exists - not only through research but of the research quoted extensively in the book. Did you even listen to it?

I’ve not even listened to the book yet - the 5 stars are for all the knee jerk reactions from virtue signalling NPCs

NOT SCIENCE! Put it in religion.

Well, here we are in 2019. The oceans temperatures are rising 3 times faster than predicted. By 2030 they will have risen by 3 feet. The warmer oceans are fueling larger more destructive weather patterns across the globe. But hay, it’s not from burning fossil fuels. It must be all of the gasbag politicians in Washington.

Every single negative comment here clearly hasn’t read the book. It doesn’t dispute climate change, it just looks at the negative consequences of prematurely banning fossil fuels.

Alex Epstein ist a unique voice. The only one in my experience who makes a strong case against environmentalism by attacking its foundatioun and roots, rather than its claims.

Man SJWs always bitching everywhere. If you read the book then pick apart its arguments, otherwise go rant on Reddit

5 stars, not only because it is a great book but it also pisses off the SJWs, virtue signalling, “science-believers”, socialist NPCs :D
