The Misinformation Age: How False Beliefs Spread - Cailin O’Connor, James Owen Weatherall

The social dynamics of “alternative facts”: why what you believe depends on who you know
Why should we care about having true beliefs? And why do demonstrably false beliefs persist and spread despite bad, even fatal, consequences for the people who hold them?
Philosophers of science Cailin O’Connor and James Weatherall argue that social factors, rather than individual psychology, are what’s essential to understanding the spread and persistence of false beliefs. It might seem that there’s an obvious reason that true beliefs matter: false beliefs will hurt you. But if that’s right, then why is it (apparently) irrelevant to many people whether they believe true things or not?
The Misinformation Age, written for a political era riven by “fake news,” “alternative facts,” and disputes over the validity of everything from climate change to the size of inauguration crowds, shows convincingly that what you believe depends on who you know. If social forces explain the persistence of false belief, we must understand how those forces work in order to fight misinformation effectively.

That’s easy enough.
Big Tech, the msm, and the Democrats.

@apollo60 actually, no. It was Kellyanne Conway who first used the term ‘alternative facts’ to sugarcoat the fact that Sean Spicer had outright lied. Republicans have a monopoly on fake news and misinformation, the rest of us couldn’t hope to keep up.

@apollo60 Jack is entirely correct. Let the title for tat go and the truth is obvious: You and most Trump supporters have had your trust, given honestly to a party and president you genuinely believed in and fought loyally for, abused and turned against you and your families. The man and party you debase yourself for by the insult, the lie, and the gun is KILLING YOU! He is killing families by the dozen while taking the very vaccine he had so many people like you refusing to take. The GOP is killing BOTH your family AND mine. THEY are both OUR enemies. Not eachother.

@apollo60 Adorable. The irony of your comment is astonishing.

“If social forces explain the persistence of false belief, we must understand how those forces work in order to fight misinformation effectively.”
There’s generally one way to fight false information: THE TRUTH.
Trouble is, the news media is largely made up of “fake news,” and half the time, they make up the very news that they report. To be honest, this is not a recent problem. How many wars have been provoked at the hand of a typewriter or keyboard?

This book is a complete farce, and I don’t believe a word of it.
Unless someone tells me to, at which point I will worship every page.
