Now Elof throws in his lot with the Lord Kermorvan who has proposed to abandon the contentious Western City and strike out across the sleeping continent to the mysterious lands of the East.
Together with Ils, princess of the Duergar, and a small band of others, they undertake a journey to rediscover a mythical city that had been abandoned in the mists of memory. There they hope to find aid and perhaps discover a means to resist the destructive evil of the Ice.
Along the way, Elof begins to wield the vast power that underlies his skills at the forge. He and his companions encounter wonders and terrors in haunted forests and frozen plains. As they approach the ancient city, they must prepare for the most harrowing conflict of all.
