In The Late Breakfasters, young Griselda de Reptonville is invited by Mrs. Hatch to a house party at her country estate, Beams (which, incidentally, is haunted). There, amidst an array of eccentric characters and bizarre happenings, she will meet the love of her life, Louise. But when their short-lived relationship is cruelly cut short, Griselda must embark on a quest to recapture the happiness she has lost.
Never before published in the United States and long unobtainable, Aickman’s odd and whimsical novel is now available for the first time as an audiobook, narrated by Matt Godfrey.

The craziest thing about Robert Aickman (as an author/writer) is the fact that it was a very minor part of his life that he referred to as not even a hobby.
Which is interesting. Because when you’ve actually read all of Aickman’s fiction, it’s very difficult to enjoy 98% of every other horror fiction in the world since Aickman was the sort of genre literature game-changer that world (wrongly) anointed to H.P. Lovecraft not long after the extremely racist & Hitler-admiring Howard died.
I fully appreciate that both authors, AIckman & Lovecraft, were unquestionably ahead of their time, so to speak – and they share the unfortunate fate of being authors that weren’t known or respected while alive, but each of them gained levels of posthumous acclaim that neither of them would have been able to process, (but for VERY different reasons). Again, Aickman wrote what he called his, “strange tales,” the way that kids who play high school golf do – in that they enjoy it to an extent, and it’s occasionally gratifying, but none of them play for their high school golf team thinking that they’re basically on their way to winning the next U.S. Open or Masters tournament, you know? But then with the snobby, xenophobic, introverted, and (obviously) Oedipal Howard Philip Lovecraft…well, we need not imagine what he thought his work was worth while he was alive, as there are several documents he left behind that were scribed from atop his ivory tower where only Mother was allowed to disturb him :P
