It sets out the overwhelming evidence that material inequities have powerful psychological effects: when the gap between rich and poor increases, so does the tendency to define and value ourselves and others in terms of superiority and inferiority. A deep well of data and analysis is drawn upon to empirically show, for example, that low social status leads to elevated levels of stress hormones, and how rates of anxiety, depression and addictions are intimately related to the inequality which makes that status paramount.
Wilkinson and Pickett describe how these responses to hierarchies evolved, and why the impacts of inequality on us are so severe. In doing so, they challenge the conception that humans are inescapably competitive and self-interested. They undermine, too, the idea that inequality is the product of “natural” differences in individual ability. This book draws together many of the most urgent problems facing societies today, but it is not just an index of our ills. It demonstrates that societies based on fundamental equalities, sharing and reciprocity generate much higher levels of well-being, and lays out the path towards them.

There has never been a case where socialism has been successful without people becoming dependent on the government. That is not success, it is complete failure. Socialism is a fairy tale. True equality is a fairy tale, because even in the most equal of societies the elite still exist and rule. Wise up and wake up before it is too late.

Does this happiness come from economic equality (equal poverty/equal wealth) or equal liberty? Given the conditions that Wilkinson and Pickett promote, who gets to decide how much the blue collar worker and the white collar worker’s salary will be, where they will work, what they will eat, what clothes they will wear and where they will live?

More equal societies ALWAYS promote peace and happiness. Look at Europe. The most unequal society in Western Europe is UK. 9 of the top 10 poorest regions in UK. High crime-rate, high suicide and homicide rates compared to Scandinavian countires and even France and Germany although higher immigration in France and Germany. Inequality is the worst social disease. Those who howl about Vanezvela should look up the role of that CIA and US sanctions played in that unfortunate country. UK has free healthcare and zero related bankruptcies, more than 600k people go bankrupt in USA every year because of the cost of the healthcare.
