In this practical, refreshingly optimistic guide, philosopher William B. Irvine explains how centuries-old wisdom can help us better cope with everything from the everyday stresses of modern living to its significant crises. The Stoic Challenge uniquely combines insights from ancient Stoics like Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, and Epictetus with techniques discovered by contemporary psychological research, such as anchoring and framing. The result is Irvine’s surprisingly simple, updated “Stoic test strategy,” which teaches us how to dramatically alter our emotional response to life’s stumbling blocks. Not only can we overcome these obstacles—we can benefit from them, too.

Stoicism is a tired and done idea. Yes all these emperors and priests and politicians were into it. Ok. And what purpose did that serve. Transformative? Improve people’s lives? Give people resources to actually navigate the world better? No. It provided justification for the status quo. Which is precisely why actual philosophers didn’t stop their inquiries in 300ad. Nietzsche, Hegel, Kant, Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, Heidegger, Lacan, Deleuze, Wittgenstein, Simon Weil, State and Simone de Beauvoir etc. All of those thinkers are from the last 250 years and none of them are stoics. But ignore all that right, and reach for the thinking dead empires and irrelevant men living in dysfunctional societies long since vanished from the earth, these are your guys? Honestly, this is like reaching for a palliative when you have a book full of cures. Screw Stoicism.

@toadmanga de Beauvoir is a hack. Epictetus runs circles around her.

The return of stoicism is not an event but a symptom. It appears at the time of the decline and fall of great civilisations. The sun is setting on the West. Very soon it will be business as usual (China leading the world through manufacturing and prosperity) and the age of warmongering will come to an end.

Hey toadmanga- why exactly is it a bad thing to react to a crisis with your mind and not your fear or anger? And exactly how did Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, and Epictetus suddenly stop being “actual philosophers?” They were, and remain, the essential skeleton on which ” Nietzsche, Hegel, Kant, Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, Heidegger, Lacan, Deleuze, Wittgenstein, Simon Weil, State and Simone de Beauvoir etc” proceeded from and through. Without them, the “actual philosophers” would have had nothing interesting to say.
Screw toadmanga.

@toadmanga
Why not Stoicism + other philosophies? Stoicism is good for a sane mind. Yes being peaceful isn’t always a revolutionary act, people need balance.
Some of the newer philosophers you mentioned were depressed people, fighting against the status quo is tough on the mind.

@toadmanga please share what you think is better then. James Stockdale tapped into Stoicism to survive 7 years of the most brutal torture, just on that point alone it seems these ideas are very powerful.

There’s a guy at work who refuses to use the bathroom or toilet. He is against the idea and uses a bucket he brings from home and expands non-stop on why it’s better to use a bucket and the weird thing is that even if he never use toilets he still spends all his breaks in the bathroom and rants to everyone taking a leak that a bucket is a much more genuine and it’s everyday like this for him. People kinda dislike him and he thrives on this. Anyway
