The hidden story of the wanton slaughter - in Indonesia, Latin America, and around the world - backed by the United States.
In 1965, the US government helped the Indonesian military kill approximately one million innocent civilians. This was one of the most important turning points of the 20th century, eliminating the largest communist party outside China and the Soviet Union and inspiring copycat terror programs in faraway countries like Brazil and Chile. But these events remain widely overlooked, precisely because the CIA’s secret interventions were so successful.
In this bold and comprehensive new history, Vincent Bevins builds on his incisive reporting for the Washington Post, using recently declassified documents, archival research, and eye-witness testimony collected across 12 countries to reveal a shocking legacy that spans the globe. For decades, it’s been believed that parts of the developing world passed peacefully into the US-led capitalist system. The Jakarta Method demonstrates that the brutal extermination of unarmed leftists was a fundamental part of Washington’s final triumph in the Cold War.

@privateero “what would have happened if communists gained power”
We don’t know, the US government murdered them all. So there’s only one bad guy here.

@privateero
So the Nazi’s were capitalists who started a semi-global conflagration via WW2. 60 million people we’re killed as a result of the war.
Given your logic, all capitalist nations will cause comparable death tolls if a capitalist party administers any state government.
How many Indians died uneccesarily under the British Raj?
How many Algerians under French imperialism?
Why are all communists held responsible for Stalins excesses and the excesses of communists in a few less consequential nations?
While all capitalists get off free. When capitalist powers have started some of the worlds worst wars. As it literally incentivises war as arms dealers know the government in power will spend more on violence than any other potential good or service.
Im not a communist, as there is no way a communist state can exist while the US and Europe demand that all states be laissez-faire capitalist to get anything near fair trade terms as they’ll never get fair ones. So belief in communism is immature and turns a blind eye to the current military balance of forces. That would be deployed if any state adopted a communist posture. Nonetheless, this thoughtless vilification of an idea makes no sense. Not to mention the fact that no communist government has ever been treated like a sovereign state by Western powers. One of the major reasons communism failed was the state of seige america and its western fellow travelers put every communist nation under.
If communism was such a bad idea, the west would not have to intervene to help ensure it failed. They could have just left the situation alone and it would have deteriorated. But the west was not confident in their belief that communism was bad so they had to put their thumbs on the scale. Demonstrating the real political motives behind vilifying communism. Which were to protect elites with vast sums of wealth that are kept out of the economy for their own personal satisfaction.
