Recent years have seen an explosion of protest against police brutality and repression. Among activists, journalists, and politicians, the conversation about how to respond and improve policing has focused on accountability, diversity, training, and community relations. Unfortunately, these reforms will not produce results, either alone or in combination. The core of the problem must be addressed: the nature of modern policing itself.
This audiobook attempts to spark public discussion by revealing the tainted origins of modern policing as a tool of social control. It shows how the expansion of police authority is inconsistent with community empowerment, social justice - even public safety. Drawing on groundbreaking research from across the world, and covering virtually every area in the increasingly broad range of police work, Alex Vitale demonstrates how law enforcement has come to exacerbate the very problems it is supposed to solve.
In contrast, there are places where the robust implementation of policing alternatives - such as legalization, restorative justice, and harm reduction - has led to a decrease in crime, spending, and injustice. The best solution to bad policing may be an end to policing.

…just as the best solution to burglary is dispensing with locks.

Wow! Sounds great! Why haven’t we been doing this all along? Chicago just had its highest 24 day homicide total in 60 years. Let’s try it there first.

As a resident in the Minneapolis/St Paul suburbs, I can’t say I’m surprised by short sightedness of the Minneapolis City Council that voted 9 out of 12 to disband the Minneapolis Police Department.
What I would find amusing if it wasn’t so pathetically sad, is the people that will suffer the most from such an incredibly stupid act, is those individuals that are on the lower end of the economic scale. Mainly, the bulk of the protesters (the vast majority of which were peaceful), the vandals, the looters, and the arsonists.
Over 300 businesses were destroyed in the Twin Cities, many of them owned/operated by minorities. They employed thousands of workers who now are out of work and may never get their jobs back again. These businesses represent a significant lose to a neighborhood that has struggled to revitalize itself for decades.
And yet the wise (mostly white) council members in infinite brilliance think eliminating the police in one of the state’s highest crime rate areas is a good idea. Brilliant, truly brilliant.
In the Twin Cities, we can only hope that Derek Chauvin’s trial takes place in early January 2021 and that he is found guilty of 2nd degree murder.

When they say defund don’t be tricked into thinking reform. This is what they want and the left will never be satisfied until you bow to them…. oh wait that’s already happening.

Wouldn’t need cops if it weren’t for all the criminals…

All the reactions above are from people who have not reads anything about the subject, who only saw the provocative title and maybe somethngn on Fox News.
Interview with the author: https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2020/06/03/457251670/how-much-do-we-need-the-police
“Well, I’m certainly not talking about any kind of scenario where tomorrow someone just flips a switch and there are no police. What I’m talking about is the systematic questioning of the specific roles that police currently undertake, and attempting to develop evidence-based alternatives so that we can dial back our reliance on them. And my feeling is that this encompasses actually the vast majority of what police do. We have better alternatives for them.”
If you have a murder or robbery, you will call the police. If you have homeless people, you don’t call the police to move them on or beat them up, you deal with homelessness, which is NOT a problem that can be solved by police. Same for a lot of drug abuse problems. Instead of spending untold billions on police and prisons, spend on dealing with the underlying problems. It is always much cheaper and more effective to prevent than to deal with the mess after. But like US health care, the profit motive pushes to reactive rather then preventative action. So you have 2.3 million in prison, each costing a small fortune to maintain. Spend a tenth of that on people BEFORE they are criminalised by the system. Lower taxes, less crime. Fewer guns would make a huge difference too. But we know how insane Americans are about guns.

“The End of Policing” lends itself more logically & sensibly towards a meaning such as “the purpose of policing” I should think. That would invite a serious, mature consideration, of course. However, it’s certainly a more incendiary & absurd title by the time the reader arrives at the sentence “The best solution to bad policing may be an end to policing” rather than, perhaps, thoughtful, substantial reform.
Early intervention is critical for juvenile offenders, and can yield long-term, beneficial results in a proportion of cases by reducing recidivism rates. Redirection & diversion programmes can be very successful. However, these processes involve avoiding the court/judicial process, and the consequent institutionalisation of the offender. They most certainly do not involve the exclusion or elimination of the policing function, as the programmes are most successfully run by the police.
No society has eliminated crime to the degree that they have substantially moved to a “better alternative” to policing. Restorative justice, for instance, is marginal and depends on the sincere engagement of the offender (& where it’s not merely tactical in nature). Victims actually report increased trauma following unsatisfactory experiences with RJ.
Internationally, citizens/voters typically call for more police, substantial sentences, and view prisons as a means of containment for serious criminals. Until all human beings are fully responsible agents, this policing function will likely be necessary.

Yup, end of employment, generations raised on welfare!

It’s always fun to watch how quickly the people who scream the loudest about how bad the police are change their tune as soon as they become the victim of a crime.

The current system isn’t working unless you call USA having the highest incarceration rate in the world successful. The prequel to handmaids tale live on TV right now.Just listen to the book, who knows he might have some good ideas, can’t be worse than cops choking people to death in broad day light in front of witnesses.

@cklem420, I agree with you that something needs to change. But legalization of drug use, providing safe injection facilities (and drug treatment programs) isn’t my idea of a positive change.
How about breaking up the police union that protects bad cops like Derek Chauvin from remaining on the police force? It’s not like the police departments don’t know who the bad cops are, they just can’t remove them.

One look at the video of George Floyd’s tragic death and it is clear that the officer involved displayed signs of psychopathy.
The problem is more to do with police unions than the police. It would be like calling for the dismantling of the medical community because there’s some quack doctors and nurses. Psychopaths have even been counted among them. Should we close all hospitals and nursing homes?
Interestingly enough, there’s a similarity between Floyd and Flynn, both are victims of the abuse of authority by corrupt civil servants. So many police are completely ignorant of the rights of citizens and their place as a protector of those rights, rather than a usurper of them.
Rather than dismantling the police, a better idea would be to have a mandated continuance of education, starting with the founder’s documents such the Magna Carta, natural law, the Declaration Of Independence, the US Constitution, etc.

love the irony of everyone talking about how great cops are on a piracy site

@euchrid exactly, it identifies the putrid mind of the goofs who want to suck off their dad so they foam over cops and rich boys that hate the military.
