Ancient Constantinople, the glorious capital of the Eastern Roman Empire for over 1,000 years, and the jewel of Christendom, is the setting for this incredible historical novel.
No other city in the world could compare with it in grandeur, splendor, and wealth. And when it fell to the Turks in 1453, it must have seemed like the end of the world to Christians. Famed author Mika Waltari takes us into the last months of this dying city as revealed in the diary of John Angelos, a strange man hopelessly in love with the daughter of an eminent Byzantine official. In this powerful novel, which closely follows actual historical events and personalities, Waltari explores the passions and follies of a civilization on the brink of disaster. With shrewd psychological insight, Waltari provides us with an unbelievable tapestry of false hopes, dogged determination, and fanatic religious faith as seen through the eyes of the 15th century Greeks and Italians who valiantly defended the city to the bitter end.
With chaos and despair deepening into a pall of gloom, the sultan’s huge army surrounds Constantinople and assaults its massive walls. We peer over the shoulder of John Angelos as he dons his armor and plunges into the tumultuous events taking place amid smoldering suspicions of betrayal and assassination. But as always, the beautiful Anna Notaras lingers in his imagination…Listeners will gain even greater enjoyment by perusing the Wikipedia article “Fall of Constantinople”, as well as availing themselves of the accompanying maps

Serendipity doo-dah, I was just reading The Egyptian & The Etruscan again recently.
Good advice on being more conversant with the history, jo. The city was taken with enormous brutality.

Odd combination of eras but my favorites are, ancient, medieval, and the Turkish Empire.

Yeah, same here really; ancient (Egypt, Fert Crescent, Mesopotamia), Classical (Gk/Hellenic, Rome), medieval (especially), Renaissance (all 4 of them), & the hx of ideas generally. Still keen on modern hx, but things get slightly less interesting the more industrial they become. (It’s somehow less human.)
The issue with Western education is how thoroughly Eurocentric it is. Even in college it was the same. It’s something I tried to correct in later yrs, but Europe remains the consuming interest.
The advantage of historical fiction is that it can generate such imaginative sympathy (Robt Graves, Mary Renault, Marguerite Yourcenar, Umberto Eco, Anthony Burgess)

The city was taken with enormous brutality by The fourth crusade. The ottomans have rebuilt the city to new grandeur.

…all such “nationalist history” is always worthless; a tissue of self-serving lies. The Ottomans began & ended in mass murder, terror & blood. The regime’s last major act was the genocide of the Armenians - still shamefully denied. However, this book does not concern the Late Ottoman genocides of Greeks, Armenians, Assyrians, Kurds, etc.
It concerns the Ottomans savage attack on Constantinople in 1453, which was a human catastrophe, as we know. They pillaged & murdered for three whole days. They pointedly raped young girls & boys on the altars of churches, including that of St. Sophia. They stole & destroyed. Before this, Constantinople was the most beautiful city in history.
Afterwards, Mehmed II enslaved more than 50000 of the survivors of Ottoman brutality & depredations.
What kind of evil scumbag worships such genocide, and barbarically thirsts for the repeat of such genocide? Would have “no pity” if such was to happen again?

Thank you so much

Thank you very much for this. I’ve been seeking it for years.
@caesar963: I’m on the same page. I recently listened to the Etruscan and Roman. Excellent work, and I heartily recommend it.
