For years, America has been plagued by slow economic growth and increasing inequality. Yet economists have long taught there is a trade-off between equity and efficiency - that is, between making a bigger pie and dividing it more fairly. That is why our current predicament is so puzzling: today, we are faced with both a stagnating economy and sky-high inequality.
In The Captured Economy, Brink Lindsey and Steven M. Teles identify a common factor behind these twin ills: breakdowns in democratic governance that allow wealthy special interests to capture the policymaking process for their own benefit. They document the proliferation of regressive regulations that redistribute wealth and income up the economic scale while stifling entrepreneurship and innovation. When the state entrenches privilege by subverting market competition, the trade-off between equity and efficiency no longer holds.
Over the past four decades, new regulatory barriers have worked to shield the powerful from the rigors of competition, thereby inflating their incomes - sometimes to an extravagant degree. Lindsey and Teles detail four of the most important cases: subsidies for the financial sector’s excessive risk taking, overprotection of copyrights and patents, favoritism toward incumbent businesses through occupational licensing schemes, and the NIMBY-led escalation of land-use controls that drive up rents for everyone else.
Freeing the economy from regressive regulatory capture will be difficult. Lindsey and Teles are realistic about the chances for reform, but they offer a set of promising strategies to improve democratic deliberation and open pathways for meaningful policy change. An original and counterintuitive interpretation of the forces driving inequality and stagnation, The Captured Economy is a “must-listen” for anyone concerned about America’s mounting economic problems and the social tensions they are sparking.

Yes, we are all victims.
We should vote the Dems and they will fix this too. Everything will be equal and free, ’cause either “The Mexicans”, “China” or “The Rich” will pay for it.
Oh, wait : “Not Sleepy at all Biden” and his Woke Dems reign supreme!
I’m sure they’ll fix everything in a jiffy.
Or at least in the next 4-8 years. That should be plenty.
Or instead their minions will write lots of books about how you are still a victim and why you should be woke 24/7.And still vote for them (spelled DEM).
So… I think we can skip this crap.
(Don’t worry, there will be many more of this coming soon & constantly #forevermore)

Thanks. Amazing how some people persist in the myth that the American Democratic party is anything more than another arm of the right wing, corrupt body politic.
More uploads like this, please.

Very interesting thanks.
As per usual the emus will continue to bury their heads in the sand and paint any evaluation of economics that recognises today’s realities as a political football.
I am sure both US parties have low information voters but and suffer an element of “Capture,” but the Trump party is entirely dysfunctional and especially harmful to those unable to exercise critical reasoning as they have been and are most vulnerable to manipulation. They are also highly charged, angry and very easily triggered.

😄 oh no. I think.. a few of the more sensitive users were triggered by this upload. Darn, i hope theyre feeling better soon.
Anyways. Doubtless everyone already knows the “what” and “how” of it? Lol. Unless they’ve been asleep the last couple decades.
A good book, about probably the single biggest threats to democracy.

This topic is getting at it. Government represents corporations. Biden and Bush represented them. Trump or Sanders had to be taken out. (Bush, Cheney, Rice is now Biden, Harris, Buttigeig… all corporate shills). And corporations have no state allegiance.

My original rating needs some adjustment..
After a few hours of listening, Im beginning to have my doubts. They sound like chicago school of economics alumni. I have a feeling their neoliberal values will ensure their solutions are far from adequate. Theyve got nothing on Thomas Pickitty.
The “nobel prize in economics” issue really needs to be addressed. There is no nobel prize in economics. They need to rename it.. i suggest they name it after the banker who bribed it into existence.
