At the heart of this classic, seminal book is Julian Jaynes’ still-controversial thesis that human consciousness did not begin far back in animal evolution but instead is a learned process that came about only 3,000 years ago and is still developing. The implications of this revolutionary scientific paradigm extend into virtually every aspect of our psychology, our history and culture, our religion - and indeed our future.

One of the most bizarre books I have ever read; though also one which I have never regretted spending time with.
Some ideas :- whether wrong or right - are paradigms you need to spend time with. You need to work through what your position is, and why, whether you finally decide you are pro or con.
This book is full of propositions you can’t really afford to ignore, if you are serious about theory of mind or epistemology in general.
You may decide to dissent from them (which I do in nearly every case):- but you can’t meaningfully dissent from something until you have at least understood it.

How is this crazy-ass book still in popular circulation? I remember reading through it when I worked at a bookstore in 2003 and saying “how is this crazy-ass book still in popular circulation.”

My all-time favourite book, and the wildest theory of consciousness you’ll ever hear. This radically altered the way I think about my own mind, history, language, and religion. It covers an enormous amount of intellectual ground, and merits a huge number of re-reads to fully comprehend it all
On a technical level, James Patrick Cronin (the ‘voice’) does an exceptional job of presenting the book, including a great deal of unusual pronunciation, words from different languages and so on. It’s a pleasure to listen to

“you can’t meaningfully dissent from something until you have at least understood it.”
Statement of the decade. So damned true.
